Salem's quadricentennial celebration (400th anniversary) will return a beloved community parade that hasn't taken place in more than 30 years.
The parade will step off at 10 a.m. on Aug. 1, 2026, at the O'Keefe Center at 225 Canal St. and proceed down Forest Avenue to Lafayette Street, continuing along Lafayette to Derby Street, and concluding at Salem Maritime National Historical Park.
Its theme, "Salem Through the Centuries," invites floats and displays that reflect the city's Indigenous roots, colonial era, maritime heritage, industrial evolution, and its role as a modern North Shore hub.
Local organizations, schools, cultural groups, and businesses are invited to participate by creating floats or displays representing eras, immigrant communities, architecture, arts and culture, innovation, or visions of Salem's future.
According to the Patch of Salem, participants can create floats representing different eras; showcasing immigrant communities that have shaped Salem; highlighting themes such as architecture, arts and culture, and innovation; or imagining Salem's future.
"We're providing the framework, but we want each organization to showcase what's meaningful to them within these guidelines," said Gini Cherol, Salem 400+ coordinator. "This approach allows for both historical structure and creative expression. It's really about letting our community tell the parts of Salem's story that matter most to them."
According to a City of Salem news release, parade organizers include the Salem 400+ Committee, the City of Salem, the National Park Service, Salem State University, Salem Trolley, the Salem Chamber of Commerce, and the North Shore CDC.
"I'm so pleased that the city and Salem 400+ are able to bring the Heritage Days parade back to our community in our quadricentennial year," Mayor Dominick Pangallo said in a statement shared with the Patch of Salem. "For many of us, memories of the Heritage Days parade are a special part of what it meant to grow up in Salem. This fun and family-friendly event will celebrate all that it means to be a diverse, optimistic, and vibrant city."
Registration for the parade is open on the Salem 400+ website. Confirmed registrants will receive a detailed packet with parade parking and logistics.
