Every time one character seems close to the truth, the narrative shifts, making you doubt everything you thought you knew.

Andie's Book Club: Nothing Ever Happens Here

Everyone is famous in a small town. You know your neighbors, the butcher, the barber, the mechanic. Most people either grew up together or are raising kids who are growing up together. Life can feel predictable - same faces, same routines - and it’s easy to think, nothing ever happens here. Until it does.

Nothing Ever Happens Here is set in a small town in Minnesota, where Shelby is brutally attacked at her best friend Mack’s café. Complicating matters even more, Shelby’s attack happened the very same night Mack’s husband disappeared. Shelby miraculously survives, but about a year and a half later it seems she may be targeted once again. To make matters worse, Mack discovers some devastating secrets her missing husband had been hiding from her.

Meanwhile, at the local retirement community, the buzz surrounding the attack has reached the residents. Never ones to sit quietly on the sidelines, they decide to start a podcast to chronicle the events and try to solve the mystery themselves. This unexpected angle adds both charm and sharp wit to the story.

I didn’t know a person could exist in the absence of any personality, but alas, we have Howard Jones.

Seraphina Nova Glass absolutely nails the small-town feel. Everyone is connected in one way or another, which keeps you constantly questioning who’s guilty and who’s innocent. Just when you’re convinced you’ve figured it out, new information comes along and completely upends your theory.

The story is told from three different perspectives, which keeps the momentum going and the suspense high. Every time one character seems close to the truth, the narrative shifts, making you doubt everything you thought you knew. Nothing Ever Happens Here keeps you guessing right up until the very end - and it delivers. It’s a nail-biting, smart page-turner with just the right balance of tension, wit, and heart. A must-read for sure.
