A new speakeasy-style lounge tucked into a Beacon Hill basement near Boston has opened to the public. Called 89 Charles, the establishment offers guests a warm, intimate 1930s-glamour vibe.

With fewer than 50 seats, the venue emphasizes a relaxed pace and high-quality cocktails over crowds, making it a luxury destination within reach of the North Shore. Its decor blends velvet seating, brass accents, candlelight, and deep green walls to create a luxe yet cozy atmosphere perfect for winter evenings.

The food-and-drink philosophy centers on indulgence and seasonality, pairing carefully crafted cocktails with thoughtfully prepared small plates. Bar manager Dave Irwin curates a comfort-forward experience with layered cocktails like the Beefed Up Old Fashioned and the Charles St. Espresso. Drinks are complemented by small shareable plates such as kaluga caviar latkes and foie-gras bratwurst.

"A December evening at 89 Charles is more than a night out — it's a gentle reminder to slow down and savor the season. The lights, the laughter, the layered cocktails — they're all part of the ritual of winding down the year," wrote Nancy E. Berry in an article for Northshore Magazine

You can find 89 Charles at 89 Charles St. in Beacon Hill. It is open Tuesday through Saturday, 5 p.m. to midnight. Reservations are recommended but not required.
