Massachusetts is poised for its strongest tourism year yet. The U.S. semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) celebrations and FIFA World Cup matches at Gillette Stadium are expected to bring thousands of domestic and international visitors to the Bay State.
Preparations have been well underway through Gov. Maura Healey's 2026 budget focus, which targets infrastructure and transportation upgrades to handle millions of visitors expected to converge on the commonwealth. The state is projecting 3 million international travelers alone. Expanded international flights at Logan International Airport, along with three new luxury hotels in Boston and Cambridge, should help to accommodate this increase in visitation.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup presence is also expected to encourage sports fans to explore broader New England getaways. Activities such as whale watching, beach excursions, and seafood tours will all enhance the visitor experience.
Beyond the U.S. 250th anniversary events and World Cup matches, additional waterfront and cultural festivities are expected to amplify the visitation boom. The Tall Ships will arrive in Boston Harbor in mid-July, and Boston Harborfest will be held over the Fourth of July weekend, featuring fireworks, reenactments, and maritime parades.
Travel and Tour World also noted that several dynamic experiences await visitors on the SouthCoast. They include opportunities to explore slow tourism and local flavors, including taking part in the Newport Cliff Walk, kayaking the Westport River, going whale watching, and attending the Marshfield Fair.
"While the state has seen its share of residents moving away in recent years, the tide is turning in a spectacular way for the business of hospitality," Travel and Tour World noted. "Between a monumental national birthday and the world's most popular sporting event, Massachusetts is poised to become the most visited state in America this year."
