Massachusetts is experiencing a wave of GameStop store closures. At least nine locations in the state are either already closed or set to close within about a week. The Boston Globe confirmed these closures with branch employees reached by phone on Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Specific Massachusetts closures include Brookline Coolidge Corners and Lunenburg Crossing, both closing Jan. 7, and East Longmeadow Heritage Park Plaza, also closing Jan. 7. Several others in Hadley, Holyoke (dates not provided), Methuen Merrimac Plaza, Raynham Shaw's Plaza, Stoughton RK Plaza, and Westfield Shops are closing around Jan. 7 or 8.

As of Feb. 1, 2025, GameStop's annual report listed 2,325 U.S. stores, including 36 in Massachusetts, 16 in New Hampshire, seven in Maine, six in Rhode Island, and three in Vermont. In its latest quarterly report, filed in December 2025, GameStop reported that it expected to close “a significant number of additional stores in fiscal year 2025,” on top of the 590 stores it said it closed in the U.S. fiscal year 2024.

According to a USA TODAY Network report, the gaming retail chain will reportedly close hundreds of stores this month. While GameStop has not officially announced the number or locations of stores that will be closing, lists being distributed online from emails sent to customers and local store signage total almost 200 GameStop closures.

“During the beginning of December, we noticed we weren't getting a lot of shipments in, so we kind of had a gut feeling,” an employee at the location inside The Shops at Chestnut Hill told The Boston Globe. The individual spoke on the condition of anonymity because GameStop had not authorized her to speak with the press.

Attempts to reach a GameStop spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful.
