If you’re raising a family in Massachusetts, you can go ahead and give yourself a little pat on the back. A new study from WalletHub has named the Bay State the best place in the country to raise a family in 2026, topping all 49 others in a comparison of affordability, safety, and quality of life.

The personal-finance site evaluated all 50 states across 50 different measures of family friendliness. The list looked at key factors like median family income, housing affordability, health care quality, crime rates, and school performance.

Massachusetts took the top overall spot, thanks in large part to its strong education and health care systems, as well as relatively low rates of infant mortality and family poverty. According to WalletHub, the state ranked 3rd in infant mortality, 10th in the percentage of families living in poverty, and 9th for separation and divorce. Its ranking for violent crime (25th) and median family income (14th after adjusting for cost of living) indicate there’s still room for improvement, but the pros clearly outweigh the cons.

Overall, the study suggests that families here have access to excellent schools, good job opportunities, and supportive community resources—factors that make day-to-day life a little smoother for parents juggling work, childcare, and rising costs.

The report lands at a time when raising a child is becoming more expensive nationwide. WalletHub cited research estimating that it costs more than $320,000 to raise a child to age 18. For Bay State families already feeling the pinch of high housing and childcare expenses, the ranking serves as a reminder that the investment may come with quality returns.

While Massachusetts doesn’t have the lowest cost of living, its family-oriented amenities and emphasis on education keep it competitive. Whether it’s weekend strolls along the Charles, library story times, or small-town youth sports, the state’s combination of urban opportunity and suburban calm continues to draw families looking for balance.
