The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is launching a free, month-long Black History Month programming series at Roxbury Heritage State Park and Fall River Heritage State Park to share the history of Massachusetts' Black community.

The lineup includes artistic exhibitions, conversations with local leaders and historians, and activities for all ages. 

Programming at the Fall River Heritage State Park includes:

  • Lunch and Learn on the Underground Railroad (Feb. 13)
  • Kwanzaa-themed sewing workshop (Feb. 18)
  • Presentation on the First Rhode Island Regiment in the American Revolution (Feb. 21)
  • Exhibit on abolitionist Lewis Hayden (Daily throughout February)

Members of the public can explore interpretive panels about Melnea A. Cass, a famed Boston civil rights activist, at the Melnea A. Cass Recreation Center in Roxbury.

DCR is also presenting programs in “Community Conversations,” a new series of lectures and discussions examining various chapters of Boston's history. They include:

  • Conversation on the history of local Black-owned businesses with Marie Firmin, creator of the Roxbury Black Wall Street Historical Project (Feb. 8)
  • Celebration of the Juneteenth Flag's origins in Massachusetts (Feb. 22)
  • A closing “Unity in the Community” gathering with leaders, music, activities, and resource booths (Feb. 28)
