MassDOT on What to Expect from Holiday Travel
Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) offered some important information if you’re planning on traveling this holiday season.
To begin with, those who will be driving during the holidays will see a break with construction. NBC10 Boston quoted MassDOT highway administrator Jonathan Gulliver saying, “To make your journey easier, scheduled construction on major roadways will pause on the morning of the 24th and until the 26th and again from the 31st through January 2 for New Years.” (This is especially helpful since around 90% of those traveling will be doing so by automobile.)
NBC10 Boston noted that there’s already an increase in travelers at Boston’s Logan International Airport. While 80 million Americans traveled during the Thanksgiving holiday, AAA estimates that over 119 million Americans will be traveling during Christmas and New Years.
MassDOT also says that travelers of all varieties need to plan ahead when they leave their homes in order to ensure safe travel for everyone. Also, if you are flying, consider leaving a bit earlier than usual since there will be an influx of airline passengers going through security.
Will Massachusetts Have a White Christmas?
Can a Massachusetts white Christmas be expected in a couple of weeks, or will conditions just be cold?
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, there is no chance of snow in Massachusetts. In fact, nearly all of New England has no snow in the forecast, except for Northern Maine where there is a chance of snow.
This prediction coincides with the Old Farmer’s Almanac’s forecast for the entire winter, which says this winter is expected to be more on the mild side. The Almanac states, “Temperatures will be average to slightly above average during winter (though 2% colder than average during February). The region will also experience shots of cold in mid-December, early and late January, and late February.” As for snow overall this winter, snowfall is expected to be below average.
