Fans are still having a hard time coming to grips with the death of Toby Keith. This fan included. Perhaps it’s because he came off as such a strong, larger-than-life character. That rough-around-the-edges, tough-guy, cowboy persona was evident in many of Toby’s lyrics. But there was also a softer side on full display in Toby Keith love songs. To celebrate the sensitive side of the Big Dog Daddy, and with Valentine’s Day nearly here, I give you 5 of Toby Keith’s best love songs, in my opinion.

I’ve always felt such a connection to this artist. Not just because I have interviewed him so many times, and seen so many shows. But, also because we both started in country music the same year. When Toby released his first single, “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” in 1993, this radio station was born. We’ve grown up together in this business. And as much as I love his sassy silly songs, the macho story songs, and drinking songs, I really appreciate his tender love songs. I picked the songs that make me feel all the feels.  You know, the lyrics that bring you into the love story or the memories of the love that was.

Here, you can get to know Toby Keith, the artist, through some of his most vulnerable lyrics and melodies. We all know the man behind good-time hits like “I Love This Bar” and patriotic bangers like “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue.” But here you can come to understand the softer side of the singer/songwriter. Did you know Keith wrote nearly every one of his songs? In fact, according to the Songwriters Hall of Fame, Toby is a stand out for having written at least one chart-topper every year, over a 20 year period. What an accomplishment.

What are the best Toby Keith love songs? Find out here about the songs that exposed the big guy’s heart. These are the story song, power ballads that also defined his remarkable career. These are 5 of the best Toby Keith love songs.

  • 1. You Shouldn't Kiss Me Like This

    Released: October 2000

Written by: Toby Keith, Scotty Emerick

Warning, windows may fog up while listening to this song. Toby shows his romantic side in storytelling here. It’s a story of attraction and desire. Two friends find themselves caught up in a moment. “There’s a different feel about you tonightIt’s got me thinking lots of crazy things. I even think I saw a flash of light. It felt like electricity.” He goes on to tell the woman, “You shouldn’t kiss me like this, unless you mean it like that. ‘Cause I’ll just close my eyes. And I won’t know where I’m atWe’ll get lost on this dance floor…Spinning around.”

  • 2. Does That Blue Moon Ever Shine On You

    Released: February 1996

    Written by: Toby Keith

Ahh, the tale of a love lost. It may be lost, but certainly not forgotten, in this chart topper of Keith’s Blue Moon album. The narrator is torn because he was glad the relationship came to an end, initially. But now he can’t stop thinking about her. He looks up in the sky at night wondering if the moon is shining on her like it’s shining on him. And is she thinking about him like he is her?

    He sings:

    Ever since you went away
I find that I’m still missing you
And I just got to know
Does that blue moon ever shine on you?
I wanna hold you close to me
Feel just like it used to be
And baby, if you feel like I do
    You can come to me?”

  • 3. Rock You Baby

    Released:

Written by: Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick

“Rock You Baby” tells the tale of a chance encounter in a cafe. Their eyes meet, he sees hurt in her eyes from a past relationship and all he can think is I want to make her feel better. It’s probably Toby’s most unguarded love song. He just opens himself up to the possibility of love through tenderness and caring.  After the couple’s initial meeting, the relations moves on and Toby professes:

“Tonight I finally found someone who makes me feel like my life is just begunI said girl, believe in me and I’ll show you how it’s doneI’m gonna rock you baby to sleepI’m gonna make you crazy over meI’m gonna hold you like you’ve never been held beforeAnd love you till you tell me you can’t love anymore”

  • 4. We Were In Love

    Released: June 1997

Written by: Chuck Cannon and Allen Shamblin

Although Toby Keith didn’t write “We Were In Love” he chose to record it for his Dream Walkin‘ album and release it as the first single. He didn’t often record other people’s songs, but obviously felt strongly about this heartbreaker. It tells the story of a long lost love and his yearning to go back to that feeling when they were so in love. The chorus of this power ballad says it all:

“And we were a rock, ready to rollAnd there was a fire down in our soulsAnd all the whole world had to stand stillThen turn around us ’cause that was the dealAnd, oh, how those nights went flowing like wineWhen I was all yours and you were all mineAnd we were in love”

  • 5. God Love Her

    Released: November 2008

Written by: Toby Keith and Vicky McGehee

“God Love Her” is one of my favorite Toby Keith songs. It’s not a slow- jam typical love ballad. This up-tempo jam is about the love of a preacher’s daughter. The story goes she’s a rebel and runs off with a bad boy on the back of his motorcycle. Despite her parents objections  and their gypsy life, she stays with him and ends of “saving his soul.” She never loses her relationship with God. The “bad boy” knows God loves her, and so does he.

“She holds tight to me and the BibleOn the back seat of my motorcycleLeft her daddy standin’ therePreachin’ to the choirYou see, God love herOh me and God love her”

According to Song Facts, “This was Keith’s 18th #1 on the Hot Country Songs chart and his 15th chart-topper of the ’00s. He already held the record for the most chart-toppers in the ’90s, and with this song he extended his lead.”
