With everything costing more nowadays, every penny saved counts. So here are 9 ways to get better gas mileage while you drive.

Pump Up Your Tires

Underinflated tires reduce gas mileage. Inflate your tires to the pressure recommended on the inside of your driver’s side door and check them periodically.

Watch Your Speed

AAA says fuel economy peaks right around 50 miles per hour then drops as speed rises. Speeding on the highway may be costing you $$$.

Maintain Your Vehicle

If you follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for oil and other fluid changes and for replacing air and other filters your vehicle should operate at it's intended peak performance, leading to better gas mileage.

Don't Idle Too Much

AAA says an engine burns one-quarter to a half-gallon of gas per hour when idling but a warm engine needs only around 10 seconds worth of fuel to restart.

Coast To Stoplights

Cars consume a lot of fuel to get moving from a complete stop. Plus it's kind of fun to try to time the green.

Plan Ahead

Plan your route ahead - try to get multiple errands done while in a certain area you're traveling to, try to avoid rush hours if possible, etc.

Consider Getting That Good Gas

AAA says filling up with gasoline designated as “Top Tier" is a good idea. Additives in Top Tier gas cut down on carbon deposits which can lead to carbon deposits and make your vehicle run less efficiently and, in the end, cost you more money. Something to consider...

Lighten Your Load

An additional 100 pounds in your car can reduce gas mileage by up to 1%.

Use Cruise Control When You Can

According to Edmunds.com, using cruise control under appropriate conditions can improve fuel economy by up to 14%. That's significant, huh?
