Our rears returned to cinema seats in 2023, thanks to a few huge movie releases. Barbie, The Super Mario Brothers Movie and Oppenheimer ruled the year and brought in more movie goers than we’ve seen in many years. That’s going to be a tough act to follow. However, the new year brings plenty of promise and some fabulously forecasted films to bring us back to the theaters. Here are 8 of the most anticipated movies of 2024, according to experts.

As in most years, theaters will be booming with sequels, prequels and redos. Movies like Deadpool 3, Kung Fu Panda 4 and A Quiet Place: Day One will undoubtedly be popular. But it’s a Broadway favorite that may break the bank. Does anyone make anything purely new anymore? It doesn’t seem like that is the case for the new year, with a couple of exceptions. And those are 2 highly anticipated musical biopics, that are sure to have fans singing their way into cinemas.

Working off information from AMC Theaters, Screen Rant, Wired and Ranker, I’ve complied a list of 2024’s top 8 most anticipated movies. There is truly something for everyone on this list. There’s sci-fi, musicals, biopics, action and of course, plenty of drama. There are some big names returning to the silver screen, like Ryan Reynolds, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande. We’ll meet some rising stars and ensemble casts.

Will 2024 be the year you get off the couch and back into the theaters? I’m excited to to see some of these chosen few, in this list of 8 of the most anticipated movies of 2024. I wish, as usual, there were more comedies represented in theaters, but I’m down for musicals, sci-fi in small does, and some action. So pass the popcorn, and please silence your phones. Let’s go to the movies!

  • 8. Mean Girls

    RELEASE DATE: January 12, 2024

This isn’t your mama’s “Mean Girls.” And by that I mean it is not a remake of the legendary 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams. The 2024 version is actually an adaptation of the Broadway musical, that has been running since 2018. Of coure the gist of the storyline is in tact. Cady goes to high school and struggles to find herself among the clicks. She gets sucked into the world of the “plastics” and drama ensues. The new version is directed by Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr. and is once again written by Tina Fey.  The movie stars an ensemble cast:  Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, and Christopher Briney. Tina Fey and Tim Meadows reprise their roles from the original film.

The story is about an introverted spy novelist (Bryce) who flirts with the real world of espionage. She gets thrown into a world where “nothing and no one, is at it seems” (Wikipedia).

  • 5. A Quiet Place: Day One

    RELEASE DATE: June 28, 2024

The hugely popular A QUIET PLACE  franchise of horror movies is back. But this time, it’s a prequel. You will travel back to the first day the aliens came to Earth. No John Kransinski and Emily Blunt in this installment. But an exciting cast, nonetheless.  A Quiet Place: Day One stars Luipta Nyong’o, Joseph Quinn, Alex Wolff, and Djimon Hounsou. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the prequel will divulge how the mysterious and deadly alien invasion kicked off and decimated the planet. Just some light viewing for your summer. : )

  • 4. Dune: Part Two

    RELEASE DATE: March 1, 2024

It should be called Dune: Take 2, as this movie was originally set to be released in 2023. Despite the delays, due to production, this is truly one of the most anticipated films of 2024. Could it be in part because of one of the hottest actors in Tinsel Town, Timothée Chalamet? Likely as Chalamet is coming off his recent stellar performance in Wonka. Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: The Movie introduced the actor as the character Paul Atreides. He and his family fight to survive a war and a dangerous desert planet. In this new installment, he’s still fighting, but this time it’s for revenge. He’s out to get those who wiped out his family.
