Christmas Tree Shops have officially filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Per USCourts.gov, “A chapter 11 debtor usually proposes a plan of reorganization to keep its business alive and pay creditors over time.” Judging by this, Christmas Tree Shops will do a little housekeeping, a little reorganizing, a little reimagining of the business in the modern climate. Judging by the tone of reports – the end game could get a lot bleaker but for now Christmas Tree Shops has announced that it will be closing 10 underperforming stores, including two in Massachusetts: the location on Route 28 in Falmouth and the store on Route 6A at the base of the Sagamore Bridge, which is known for its large windmill.

I would like to take a few minutes to give Christmas Tree Shops some flowers because the news of their bankruptcy bummed me out more than I would have thought. Soooo… here are some reasons I Will NOT Be OK if Christmas Tree Shops File For Bankruptcy and Close.

  • #1) It was my first taste of Boston/Cape Cod living...

For most of you who have grown up in the greater Boston metro or Cape Cod (and beyond) I’m sure you’re just as used to seeing a Christmas Tree Shop as you are seeing a Stop & Shop or a Starbucks. But when I moved to Cape Cod years ago I remember seeing the big Christmas Tree Shop at the Sagamore Rotary and thinking, “is that a year-round Christmas Superstore?! How weird. And how awesome.” I’m a big holidays fan. I soon found out my assumption was wrong but I still get a little jolt of Christmas spirit whenever I drive by one to this day, no matter the time of year.

  • #2) It's so dang local.

This goes along with #1. Just as the south has Piggly Wiggly, we have Christmas Tree Shops. Quirky name, quirky stores, and so much local flavor. You see a Christmas Tree Shop and you feel home. They have expanded to 20 states so that statement isn’t necessarily true but they were founded on Cape Cod in 1970 and it’s headquarters is now in Middleboro. It just feels like ours.

And well before the Cape was synonymous with sharks… it was synonymous with Christmas!

  • You go there for fresh holiday decorations...

They always have a wide variety of styles for decorating every holiday. My family loves to go in just to see what they’re featuring at any given time of the year. There’s always so many colors everywhere. It’s definitely an instant mood-booster for us!

  • You go there for art supplies...

When we’re looking to do some DIY art projects, we always hit up Michael’s, JoAnn Fabrics, or Christmas Tree Shops. And I usually choose CTS because you get the art supplies… and a whoooooolllee bunch more.

  • You go there to people watch...

People of Walmart have their own category. I’d argue that People of Christmas Tree Shops do too. I love people watching at CTS. Oh! And they all smell the same too. I love that. (The Christmas Tree Shops that is, not the people.)

  • Don't you just love a bargain?

I love the jingle – and it’s true! You can get a lot… for less. And I loved those TV commercials! It was like a bootleg 30 second version of Antiques Roadshow. What kind of crap did people find while at the Christmas Tree Shop?? I shouldn’t care but I could have watched those commercials for HOURS!

  • My kids thought Santa lived there...

My kids were born and raised in the Boston area. Growing up they loved driving by the Christmas Tree Shop. I always thought they loved it for the same reasons I do. Turns out they thought the big guy in red set up his residence there. I love that memory. If they close up, I won’t be reminded of it as much and I’m scared it’ll be another happy parenting moment that fades away.

  • They have literally E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G!!!

Going to the Christmas Tree Shop is like going to a flea market. You never know what you’re going to find! You’re going to laugh at some stuff, you’re going to “aww that’s cute” about some stuff, you’re probably going to buy some junk you don’t need at all. But that’s the magic of the Christmas Tree Shops. Like that wise man Forrest Gump once said, “Christmas Tree Shops is like a box of chocolates.” So he didn’t say that exactly… but I know it’s what he meant.

  • We're pulling for you Christmas Tree Shops!

We hope you can figure this difficult time out. In the meantime I’ll be taking my family there this weekend to do some people watching, stock up on some random stuff we don’t really need, and say what’s up to Santa at his home. You gotta kick out, you’re a part of what makes us us.
