We all know Charles Kelley as the raspy voiced singer from the multi-Grammy Award winning group Lady A. But do you know Charles Kelley the songwriter? Sure, he’s co-written plenty of hits for his own band. But did you know Lady A’s Charles Kelley wrote these 5 smash hits for other artists (below)?

The Lady A front man has had a hand in writing so many songs, including album cuts for stars like Hunter Hayes and Miranda Lambert. As part of one of the most successful groups in the history of country music, Kelley has collaborated with some of the best. His writing work with Luke Bryan resulted in Luke’s first #1 hit. The hitmaking trio of Lady A has racked up a record-breaking 10 No. 1 hits, with more than “18 million album units, 34 million tracks sold and nearly 5 billion digital streams,” according to their website. Just a few of the many accomplishments of the group. Of course they are best know for their 11X PLATINUM hit “Need You Now.” That song is on record as the highest certified song by a Country group. Lady A has also earned numerous awards from the ACM to the CMA, 7 Grammy Awards and even a Tony Award nomination!

Charles Kelley grew up in Augusta, Georgia as the youngest of 3 boys. According to Wikipedia, he got into music because of his older brother, Josh, who is also a singer/songwriter (and married to actress Katherine Heigl. Charles and Josh and their oldest brother John even started a band called Inside Blue, when they were teenagers. He’s known his Lady A bandmate, Dave Haywood since middle school. And they even graduated high school together. Later, Charles met Hillary at a Nashville bar. They actually recognized each other from the social media platform MySpace.

 

  • 1. Do I- Luke Bryan

    Luke Bryan released “Do I” in May of 2009. It would become his first #1 hit, and found on his sophomore album, Doin’ My Thing. Charles Kelley co-wrote this sweeping ballad with his bandmate Dave Haywood and Luke. Those are Hillary Scott’s background vocals you hear on the song. This one had Lady A all over it.

  • 2. Homegrown Honey- Darius Rucker

    Back in 2011 Lady A and Darius Rucker toured together for the first time. They became fast friends and even wrote some songs together. Rucker co-wrote “Homegrown Honey” with Charles Kelley and famed Nashville producer Nathan Chapman (Taylor Swift). This one reached #2 on the Billboard Country Music chart in 2014 and was released on Darius’s Southern Style album in 2015.

  • 3. Here Tonight- Brett Young

    Released as the first single of Young’s Ticket To L.A. album, “Here Tonight” went to #1. Brett told The Boothe song was special because he got to know Charles Kelley as a “friend and co-writer.” He went on to say, “That was the first time I ever wrote with Charles. We’ve written [together] a handful of times after that. Not only having my cut that Charles was a writer on go No. 1, but also having [that cut] be the first time we ever got in a room together [to write], it’s [really special].”

  • 4. Home Sweet- Russell Dickerson

    “Home Sweet” was the result of a writing session between Russell Dickerson, Charles Kelley and Casey Brown. Russell released it in early 2021 as the second single from his second album, Southern Symphony.  It became a top 11 hit. Later, he released a remix featuring Lady A.

  • 5. Growing Old With You- Restless Road

    Zach Beeken, Garrett Nichols, and Colton Pack became Restless Road after meeting and forming a group during the 3rd season of the The X Factor in 2013. They all auditioned as solo artists, along with Kane Brown that year. Simon Cowell put the 3 together and the rest is Restless Road history.  Their harmonies shine on their only charted hit so far, 2022’s Growing Old With You.” The song was written by Charles Kelley of Lady A along with Jordan Minton and Jordan Reynolds.
