Kruser’s Local Catch

“I write feel-good music with the hope that a positive message can make an impact in an often negative world.” Those words, from a New England singer/songwriter, are powerful. A plethora of positivity is exactly what we need right now. I’m happy to introduce you to my Local Catch of the Week, Adam Frates from Carver, Massachusetts.

With a folky, warm delivery, Adam’s original song, “Until the Morning” will have you going back for another cup. There’s a little Zac Brown in his voice, a touch of Cat Stevens in his melody, and a hint of Jordan Davis in his messaging. If you recall, the last few songs from Davis have been about the simple wonders of life. Love, family and storytelling have fueled the music of Adam Frates.

Adam is first and foremast a family man, and that reflects in his music. He leads a full life with family, music and his rather unusual full-time day job. See what it is, below. Having been at the music game for over 15 years, Frates isn’t afraid to put his emotions out there. He has had plenty of music education growing in a family that plays and sings. And he is here to share his talents with you. So, take a listen to the music of Adam Frates. Plus, you will find out some interesting facts about this artist and where to catch him performing live. It’s all right here, and it’s a great way to support our local singer/songwriters from New England. Just listen, learn and follow their social media.

  • The Music

Take a listen to Adam’s new release, “Until the Morning,”

He said, “I wrote this song for my wife, it was based off a simple Sunday morning of having coffee, hanging with the kids, going for a walk with the dogs and enjoying the little things in the morning. This song goes great with a up of coffee. It features my talented friends Kenny Isaacs on Cajon and Steve Capachione on Piano. This song and all of my music is produced by Brad McCarthy.”

  • The Story

    • Grew up in: the Small town of Plympton, MA
    • Now living in: Carver, MA (for almost 20 years)
    • Current single : “Until the Morning”  along with other new releases. “I’ve got Love”. “Top of the world” and “I’m Home”
    • What lead you to music: I come from a music family, my dad was an Allstate drummer/ musician , my brother is a guitar player in multiple bands (one we were in together) my uncle is a singer / songwriter and my 16 year old nephew is now and up and coming local Musician. I’ve wanted to play music as long as I can remember. I remember recording original songs on a tape recorder back in the early 90s. I still have old notebooks full of songs I’ve been writing for the last 20+ years. I used watch MTV as a kid and dream of playing music in front of people someday.
    • How long have you been performing:  I’ve been playing out professionally since 2018 (15 years).  I got my first guitar when I was in sixth grade. I did take a break for a few years and my brother-in-law/best friend got me back into playing music. Since then I haven’t stopped. I sang a solo at my sixth grade graduation and my first grade teacher who I still talk to reminds me how I used to get up and sing in front of the class all the time.
    • First country song I learned:  The first country song I leaned and played live was “Cruise” by Florida Georgia Line. Although I’m sure I played Johnny Cash songs before that.
    • Describe your sound: Although I’m not 100% a country artist, my music is country influenced. I try to send out a positive message in an often negative world. I would say my sound is a mix of country, folk and roots sometimes even a touch of hip hop. My Original music is known for spreading positive vibes and trying to lift people up with my lyrics and melodies.
    • Who inspires you: My kids inspire me, my wife, my family, the good people around me. Country musicians who have inspired me are Chris Stapleton, Eric Church, Darius Rucker, Willie Nelson and more.
    • Awards :  Last year in 2022 I was nominated for “Rising Star in MA” by the New England Music Awards and I was nominated once before for “Live Act of the year” I did not win the awards but being recognized and nominated among so many incredible musicians was good enough for me.
    • Dream duet partner: For a country duet I’d have to say Willy Nelson or Chris Stapleton. I am also very grateful for the local musicians I get to play , sing and collaborate with all the time. The Talent on the south shore of Massachusetts is unbelievable.
    • All time favorite country song: That’s a tough one, I listen to so many genres of music but as far as country, one of my favorite songs is definitely “Sinner like me” by Eric Church. Another favorite is parachute“ by Chris Stapleton.
    • First country concert: I haven’t been to a ton of country concerts but I have seen Jason Aldean, Darius Rucker, Brad paisley and Chris Stapleton which were all incredible shows.
    • Day Job: oddly enough I am a Funeral Director by day. I work with my mother and my brother at our family business. my dad bought the business back in the 1978. He sadly passed away at the age of 48 from cancer. Although it’s a difficult job, I find gratitude in helping families and I’m thankful to get to work with mine every day. I guess that’s one of the reasons I love music and performing so much, it gives me balance and creativity in life when my day job can be tough at times.
    • Most proud moment: Becoming a father Was definitely my proudest moment in life. I’ve always wanted to be a dad. Another huge proud moment for me was on January 21, 2016 when I got Sober. It has been the foundation for me to rebuild my life and myself as a person. I simply like the person I am better when I’m sober, so I’ll continue to work hard every day to stay that way.
    • Craziest thing that happened in my music career:  My band “Last Call” (although we don’t play often anymore, but still a band) we sold out the Hard Rock Café in Boston with ticket sales, my other band “Whiskey Burn” sold out Plymouth Memorial Hall. My band Last Call also won the 2014 hard rock Café battle of the bands in Boston.
    • Other things I like to do: I’m a family man first and foremost. I love traveling with my wife, kids and our dog Bella. We also own a home in Twin Mountain New Hampshire which we love to go up and spend time at. I love fitness and exercise. I enjoy nature and music photography. Camping, hiking and anything Summer related!  I love playing guitar, writing music, recording and especially playing out live for my friends and family. Every show is a new experience and it never gets old.
    • Mantra: Peace and Love.

I was saddened to hear of Jimmy Buffett’s passing. His music with some of the first I ever learned when I started playing guitar. His vibe and life on the ocean was some thing that always attracted me to his music. Here’s a cover I did in 2019 of his song (one of my favorites) A Pirate Looks at 40. Rest in peace Jimmy and thanks for the music! ✌🏼❤️
