It’s only been about seven years since we all first heard Morgan Wallen on the radio. And it’s been 9 years since we first saw Morgan. Most of us first saw the man who has the #1 song in America on TV. That was 2014 and the country superstar’s talent was showcased in his stint on the popular singing competition show on NBC’s The Voice. This was before the famous mullet appeared. Here, you can see Morgan Wallen hairstyles, from mullets to buzz cuts and ball caps.

Over the years, Morgan has had a variety of hair styles. He has been somewhat of a trendsetter, helping to bring back the mullet. Why did he chose to revive a popular 80s and early 90s men’s hair trend? There was actually a personal reason behind it. Read about it below.

The mullet style of hair, “business in the front, party in the back” was previously made famous in country music by Billy Ray Cyrus Tracy Lawrence and Blake Shelton. Long before it was called a mullet, it was a shag. David Bowie helped to make the shag a trend, as did Rod Stewart. In the 80s Patrick Swayze rocked a mullet. Even Brad Pitt was a part of the mullet movement. So, let’s take a look, here, at Morgan Wallen hairstyles -from mullets to buzz cuts and ball caps.

  • 1. Long locks - on The Voice

When Morgan Wallen auditioned for The Voice in 2014, he sported straight, shiny, long blonde locks.  He was only 20 years old and sang the Howie Day song, “Collide” for his blind audition. Judges Shakira and Usher turned their chairs for Morgan. Here he is singing “Stay” by Florida Georgia Line, who would collaborate with Wallen on his first big hit, “Up Down.”

  • 2. Pass the Gel

By 2017 Morgan had chopped the locks in favor of a spike shorter do. Here he is performing at the ACM After Party For A Cause on March 31, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

  • 4. The Humble beginnings of a Mullet

Inspired by his father’s hair in the 1980s, Morgan started to grow out his short hair, leaving the sides tight but longer in the back and on top in the front. Yup, the humble beginnings of his famous mullet. This shot was taken during Country Thunder Music Festival in Arizona on April 8, 2018.

  • 5. Stage 2 of the Mullet

By the summer of 2018 Morgan’s mullet had become a real thing. And what would soon become his signature flannel-look was in full force. Wallen performed at the BMI Rooftop in Nashville in July of ’18.

  • 6. There's no turning back

By 2019, there was no turning back on the mullet embrace, or the flannel. On full display here Morgan is seen performing at Topgolf in June of 2019. Regarding his famous throwback locks, he told PEOPLE. “When my dad was my age, he had a mullet, and I wanted to try it. I went back home to my parent’s house for a holiday, and I ended up looking at photo albums, just trying to take a trip down memory lane.” He also shared to the publication, “When they got married, my dad had a mullet. Me and my dad are very similar people — he’s one of my best friends — so I was like, ‘Man, if Dad could do it, I will do it.'”

  • 7. The Recipe for a Good Mullet

At the 54th annual CMA Awards in Nashville in November of 2020, the “More Than My Hometown” singer had long waves in the back and slightly spiked hair in the front. Party in the back, business in the front…The recipe for a good mullet.

The hair was working for him, and so was the music. Morgan won his first big award- The CMA Best New Artist Award!

  • 8. Time For A Trim

By 2021 Morgan’s career was really taking off. So, good time to take some off the back? Yup, he cleaned up and shortened up the infamous mullet. Here’s Wallen in Las Vegas from May of 2022 at the Billboard Music Awards at the MGM Grand Arena.

  • 9. Change is Good

In the summer of 2022 the “Chasin’ You” singer mixed it up a bit. Here, you can see he’s grown out the previously close cut sides, for a more 70s look. Morgan looking good at the 15th Annual Academy Of Country Music Honors at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee.

  • 10. Bringin' It Back

It was baaack…well, a slightly toned down version of Morgan’s Mullet appeared at the November 2022 CMA Awards show. Here he is outside Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena at the 56th Annual CMA Awards show. His hair is a little longer on the sides from his previous versions of the mullet, but it was definitely back.

  • 11. Growing Pains

By March of 2023 Wallen opted to grow out the sides of his hair. All along the way the mustache never waivered, though. The country music artist kept this look for a few months, until recently.

  • 12. The End of an Era or "Haira"

The end of an “Haira” became hairapparent on August 11th at a show in Ohio, when Wallen declared “Before we get any further … I didn’t like my long hair anymore, so I shaved it off.” His signature locks were lopped off, mourning for the mullet could be heard around the world. Looks like we will be seeing him in a ball cap for a while.

  • 12. Batting 1000

At Fenway Park in Boston for his 3 sold out shows (August 16-18 2023), Morgan and his buzz cut hit the field before the stage with opener Ernest. I wonder how long he will hide his shaved head under a hat. And I wonder how many of his fans will follow suit. #trendsetter
