Most of us know Luke Combs for his powerhouse, road-tough vocals. We know him for his passionate live performances and poetic pen. We listen over and over again to his love songs for his wife, like ” Beautiful Crazy” and “The Kind of Love We Make.” Combs also has a knack for writing hits that can masterfully infuse humor (and beer) into songs,  like “Beer Never Broke My Heart” or  “When It Rains It Pours.” But, surprise! Luke Combs wrote these 4 songs and gave them away to other artists.

On one of the songs you’ll learn about here, he intended to be a part of- in a duet. Unfortunately, the timing didn’t work out and another male country artist was given the job. There’s a Combs penned song he had originally thought of keeping for himself, but he ended up giving to a female artist. In the end, Luke decided it would better suit her, as it was about really a better fit for a singer with a baby girl. Luke has 2 boys, by the way.

Find out all about these 4 songs. Who sang them and co-wrote them? And why were they given away? You’re answers are here! Undoubtedly, Combs is one of the biggest stars in country music today. You know he works hard to keep that title, among many others like the CMA Entertainer of the Year (2022). Last year, Luke was named Country Writer of the Year at the Broadcast Music Inc. Awards.

A Little Background On Luke Combs

Many artists start out their careers writing songs for other singers. They move to Nashville, get signed by a publishing group and start churning out songs. When Luke was just a young boy he started performing for people. He did class chorus, school musical and church choir. Dropping out of college with just 21 hours shy of his degree requirements only helped fuel the future star. So, Combs had no plan B, but he has no regrets. Certainly, it all worked out for one of country music’s biggest stars!

Take a look here and learn about the ones that got away, or at least were given away. Surprise! Luke Combs wrote these 4 songs and gave them away.

  • 1. Out In The Middle - Zac Brown Band

Written by Luke combs, Zac brown, Jonathon Singleton, Ben Simonetti

This Zac Brown Band gem was released in January of 2022 from their 7th studio album, The Comeback.  At the 56th Annual CMA Awards, the band, including new full-time member Caroline Jones, performed the song live with renowned guitarist, singer and songwriter, Marcus King.  Zac Brown told Taste of Country that the song was “a tip of the hat to the people who live out in the middle of nowhere and they’re happy being there.” In June of 2022, ZBB re-released the album and included a version of “Out in the Middle” featuring Blake Shelton.

  • 2. I Hope You're Happy Now- Carly Pearce & Lee Brice

Written by Luke Combs, Carly Pearce, Randy Montana, Jonathon Singleton

This 2020 #1 smash Carly Pearce hit originally had been planned as a duet with co-writer Luke Combs. Unfortunately, the timing wasn’t right, so Carly reached out to Lee Brice and the rest is country music history. It went on to win the CMA and ACM Musical Event of the Year awards. The song tells the story of a breakup, as seen from both parties. Lee Brice was a perfect choice, filling in for Combs. Don’t you think?

  • 3. Dance Like No One's Watching- Gabby Barrett

Written by Luke Combs, James McNair, and Emily Weisband.

How did this beautiful song get away from Luke Combs? Gabby Barrett told Country Countdown USA with Lon Helton, ““I’m a big fan of his. He pitched me a song not too long ago. As soon as I heard it, I was like it really strikes a chord with me. I’m definitely gonna put it on my next album coming out later this year. He was very adamant about the song and me recording it. I think it’s an awesome song, and it’s coming out this year.” She has mentioned on several occasions that Luke felt like it was better suited for an artist with a baby girl. You will soon be able to hear it when Barrett releases her new album, Chapter and Verse on February 2! But listen here to a piece of it:

  • 4. Deserve- Tom O'Connor

Written by Luke Combs, Tom O’Connor, Ray Fulcher

Singer/songwriter Tom O’Connor teamed up with Combs in 2017 and released the song, “Deserve.” It’s a little outside the box for Combs in that it’s more in the Americana genre. But this one is also a southern rocker, as delivered by O’Connor. He included Luke in the vocals and the video. 2017 was the year Combs released his debut album, so this Tom O’Connor single came out just as Combs was blowing up.
