Dig deep into your repetoire of college movie memories. Which one stands out the most in your mind? Did it involve a blonde socialite getting into Harvard? Or perhaps it was a Boston dude with a gift for numbers working as a janitor at M.I.T.

We all have our favorite college movies. And frankly, there are so many good ones! This is exactly why the crew at Grand Canyon University decided to do some digging and compile a list of classic college movies. They then used Google Trends data compiled from the last five years. From all their information, the team was able to come up with the most popular classic college movie in each state.
Without giving away too much, too soon, Pitch Perfect was the most searched college movie overall. Down South they love their college football, which is likely why The Waterboy was the most searched classic college movie. But, what we really care about, what we really want to know is… what about our New England states? What is Massachusetts favorite? New Hampshire? I’ll reveal the popular choices for all 6 New England States here!

  • New Hampshire

The Granite State’s most searched classic college movie is the 2001 comedy Legally Blonde. Back in July, this fun favorite starring Reese Witherspoon celebrated 20 years of entertaining audiences everywhere!

  • Rhode Island

Little Rhody’s choice was also a Harvard flick, but without all the glitter of Legally Blonde. The big search in the little state was for The Social Network.  This 2010 bio drama starred Jesse Eisenberg as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.

  • Massachusetts

Here in the Bay State our favorite classic college movie is…

Of course it is! Good Will Hunting, a movie set in Boston, about a young Boston dude and his Boston friends, and written by and starring Boston actors/screen writers takes the top spot. This 1997 gem was the most searched college movie in Massachusetts. Did we have any doubts? This is the movie that put Matt Damon and Ben Affleck on the map. The movie earned nominations in nine categories at the Academy Awards in 1998. Robin Williams won for Best Supporting Actor and Boston buddies Ben and Matt won for Best Original Screenplay. BTW, Matt Damon will celebrate his 52 birthday on October 8!

  • Maine

The Pine Tree State extends it’s branches further back in time for the most searched college movie. Love Story was the tops in Maine. This 1970 tear-jerker also centered around Harvard, and starred Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw. She’s from a wealthy family, he’s a hockey player and the rest is Kleenex worthy.

  • Vermont

The Green Mountain State is deep. They like their college movies with some drama, romance and history. Vermont’s most searched classic college movie is a 2014 highly acclaimed film about Jane Wilde Hawking and her relationship with theoretical physicist Stphen Hawking, his diagnosis of ALS, and his career in physics. The Theory of Everything starring Eddie Redmayne, earned the actor the Academy Award for his performance.

  • Connecticut

The Nutmeg State went nuts for the 2002 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, A Beautiful Mind. Connecticut’s top movie starred Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connolly, Ed Harris and Paul Bettany. It was directed by Ron Howard, who won the Oscar for Best Director.
