It’s National One-Hit Wonder Day: Here Are 5 Country Favorites!
Merriam-Webster defines the term one-hit wonder as: “A performer, group, etc., that is popular or successful only once for a brief time.”
With that said, here are some notable one-hit wonders in country music, in no particular order.
*(Most lists you will include David Lee Murphy’s “Dust On The Bottle” Since he recently scored another number one hit, “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright,” plus he had a couple of top 5’s along the way, I don’t consider him a contender)
- Josh Gracin: “Nothin’ to Lose” went to the top of the charts in 2004 following the Marine’s 4th place finish on the 2nd season of American Idol
2. Jessica Andrews: “Who I Am” was a number one hit in 2001. Jessica was just 15 years old when she released her impressive debut album. The talented teen unfortunately hasn’t scored another hit since then.
3. The Wreckers: “Leave The Pieces” slayed the charts in 2006 and became the first track by a first-time charting duo to go number one since 1991, and the first by a female duo since 1953. Pop singer Michelle Branch and Jessica Harp made up the duo, and split shortly after their country success.
4. Mark McGuinn: “Mrs. Steven Rudy” ruled the request lines in 2001 with his cleverly written story of Mrs. Steven Rudy. Think “Mrs. Robinson” gone country. It was Mark’s only entry into the top 10. But it left a lasting impression.
5. James Otto: “Just Got Started Loving You” is still a favorite on Country 102.5, but since it’s release in 2006 Otto has yet to venture into hit territory. Before his hit status, Otto gained recognition when Shania Twain chose him as her opening act on her 2004 Up! Tour
