Memorial Day Flag Garden On Boston Common Going Virtual This Year
For a decade now, the Massachusetts Military Heroes Fund, along with members of the community have gathered to create a field of over 37,000 flags on Boston Common for Memorial Day.
The flags represent each of the thousands of Massachusetts military members who have given their life in service to the country since the Revolutionary War.
This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizers have made the decision to take the display virtual this year, to comply with social distancing efforts.
“After much discussion and reflection on public health guidance for gatherings at this time,” a statement on their website reads. “We have decided to cancel the large volunteer flag garden project, as we believe that is the safest course of action right now.”
In place of the physical Boston Common Flag Garden, the organization has asked Massachusetts residents to participate in a “Virtual Flag Garden,” this year, by printing a flag graphic (linked below) and placing it in their windows over Memorial Day Weekend.

“We would be honored if you could post selfies and videos showing this support,” organizers said. “Just please tag our social media accounts (@mamilheroes) or send us your post so we can share.”
They’re also asking that participants use the hashtag #HeroesFlagGarden with their posts.
