You know when you go to a restaurant and the menu is just too... much? Pages and pages of choices. Streaming, watching, viewing shows and movies is just like that. You can get lost in a sea of what to see! I am always asking friends for recommendations. And I'm always thrilled to share some of my faves. So, as we head into the "Blizzard of '22," here are a few recommendations of shows and movies I've been lovin' on lately. Keep in mind, I much prefer funny to scary. But I appreciate good acting and great scripts in any genre.

Without further ado... here are a few of my favorite screen things:

1. Tender Bar (Amazon Prime Video movie):

Local, local, local! This movie starring Ben Affleck and directed by George Clooney was shot all over Massachusetts. Although, it's supposed to be based on Long Island, NY, the family's home in the movie was actually in Braintree, not far from the South Shore Plaza. The fictional bar where much of the movie takes place was filed in Beverly. Other shots were filmed in Wakefield, Lynn, Lowell, and Watertown. The Wakefield Bowladrome in Boston, and a social club based on Comm Avenue was used for a Yale University graduation. It's a sweet little movie set in the 1970s with some stunning performances.

2. Ozark (Netflix series):

I hate violent shows and movies, but this is more of a "family" psychological thriller, chock full of suspense, unexpected turns, and mind blowing performances- especially Julia Garner, who plays Ruth. You'll tense up watching this, wake up thinking about it, have a hard time finding anything to like about the characters... but can't stop watching!

3. Only Murders in the Building (Hulu series):

This was a sweet find. Didn't expect much going into it, but fell in love with the characters and the true crime story line. I mean, only magic can happen when  you team Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez. What brilliantly random casting.

4. Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father (Netflix series):

We came across this one last weekend and I binged all weekend. I was literally laughing out loud, and it takes a lot for me to do that! It's the story of English comedian, Jack Whitehall, who decides to take dear old, curmudgeony. dad around the world. The constant struggle of "your world/my world" is hilarious. If you need a chuckle, this is the one, mate.

5. Maid (Netflix series):

This is a survival story about a young mom who is emotionally abused, and rom a badly broken home. Every time she gains an inch, she steps back 2. It's an important conversation about our messed up system, and women who stay in bad relationship. Tender, timely, and totally tune-in worthy, especially for the performances of Andie MacDowell, and her real life daughter, Margaret Qualley. The show is inspired by the true story of writer Stephanie Land's life as a housekeeper, her life as a young single mom, and the people she meets in order to make ends meet. It's really well done!

6. Brittany Runs A Marathon (Amazon Prime Video movie):

Nothing new, just noteworthy. This 2019 movie is worth another watch, or if you've never seen it, you will never laugh so hard. Just what you need after a stressful weekend of shoveling! It's the story of a young woman, living in NYC, and her struggles with body image and relationships - with people and drugs and alcohol. No big names here, just big performances. It was a Sundance Film Festival Award.
