Nordstrom Closes Two Massachusetts Stores as Part of Online Push
Two big Nordstrom stores in Massachusetts will close their doors as the retail giant moves toward online sales. The Northshore Mall store in Peabody will close after the holidays in January, while customers have until March 8 to visit the South Shore Plaza location in Braintree.
“We believe we’ll be best able to serve customers in the area by leveraging our surrounding stores and through our digital channels,” said Nordstrom to WHDH.
Both stores opened during a big Boston-area expansion that began in 2006. The massive South Shore Plaza location covers 150,000 square feet across three floors, while the Northshore Mall store takes up 144,000 square feet on two levels.
Staff will get help through the transition. “Decisions like this are never easy and we understand the impact they have on our team members. We’re committed to taking care of our employees through this transition, which includes supporting those that are interested in finding another role within Nordstrom.”
When the stores close, it will end a 15-year run in these locations. The Braintree store first opened in spring 2009, with Peabody following in 2010.
The closures leave big empty spaces in both malls. At South Shore Plaza, the three-floor store takes up a huge chunk of the mall. In Peabody, the two-level store is one of the mall’s biggest retail spaces.
As shopping habits evolve, the company wants to grow its online business while cutting back on physical stores. These closings are part of a bigger plan to keep up with modern shopping habits.
