Boch Center Wang Theatre Kicks Off Year-Long 100th Anniversary Celebration
A huge milestone is coming up for Boston as the Wang Theatre gets ready to celebrate its 100th year in 2025. Adding to the excitement, The Boch Family Foundation has decided to keep supporting the theater through 2036.
“It’s an honor to reaffirm my commitment to the Boch Center. This treasured theatre is a vital part of the community – not just here in Boston, but across New England,” said Ernie Boch Jr. in a statement.
The historic venue, which opened its doors as The Metropolitan Theatre in 1925, will kick off its centennial celebrations with a free public movie screening from February 14-17, 2025.
The lineup includes “100 Acts of Kindness” and movies showcasing Boston’s rich film history. Visitors can also check out special exhibits at the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame.
“The Wang Theatre’s 100th anniversary is a moment to reflect on its incredible legacy while looking ahead to an exciting future,” said J. Casey Soward, President & CEO of the Boch Center.
Back in the 1980s, when demolition seemed likely, Dr. An Wang stepped in with $4 million. His donation sparked new life while preserving the building’s beautiful Art Deco character.
From its early days showing movies to its time as the Music Hall, the theater has kept going strong. Now, as the Wang Theatre, it remains a cornerstone of arts and entertainment.
Over the years, countless stars and shows have graced its stage. The building still captures the magic of the roaring twenties, with the gold trim and grandeur that made theaters special in that era.
The Boch Family Foundation, which supports education and global health programs, is building on their 2016 commitment with this new pledge.
