Boston Begins Lunar New Year Celebrations With Food, Entertainment
Boston’s Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations have begun. Now through Feb. 12, the city will commemorate the Year of the Snake through Chinese cultural heritage activities and events.
Asian Art Display at the Museum of Fine Arts
Explore Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean artwork on display at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) on Thursday, Jan. 30, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The museum will also offer lectures, musical performances, and a snake dance from an all-female lion and dragon dance group.
Chinatown’s Lion Dance Parade and Cultural Village
Boston’s largest Chinese New Year celebration will feature the Lion Dance Parade, complete with firecrackers and dancers in colorful markets moving to the beat of drums on Sunday, Feb. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The parade extends through Chinatown, starting at the corner of Harrison Avenue and Beach Street, and becomes multiple lion dances across the area happening simultaneously.
Following the parade, guests can explore Chinatown’s Main Street for activities that will include origami paper folding, Chinese calligraphy, a display of festive lanterns, and more.
Lunar New Year at Bow Market
Bow Market in Somerville will host a special Lunar New Year night market on Thursday, Jan. 30. The market will feature food and drink specials from Bow Market restaurants and products from the AAPI market. A lion dance will take place at 7 p.m. in the market’s courtyard.
Luxury Package at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel
The Mandarin Oriental hotel is offering a special package with a Lunar New Year Welcome Amenity, complimentary daily breakfast for two people, and late checkout, available through Friday, Jan. 31. The hotel will also host master chocolatier Michael Klug of L.A. Burdick Chocolates for a chocolate tasting and pop-up cocktail bar on Friday, Feb. 7, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
