Golden Retriever Takes on Three Human Candidates in Dorchester Honorary Mayor Race
Walter, a friendly 10-year-old golden retriever, has jumped into an unusual political race. This furry candidate is up against three humans in Dorchester’s honorary mayoral contest, where money raised decides who wins.
Every dollar donated counts as a vote in this special competition, which hopes to raise $50,000 to $60,000 for the yearly Dorchester Day parade.
“We live and breathe everything Dorchester,” said Jenna Marie Taylor to DotNews.
Competing against Walter are Shanequa Christmas, Gene Gorman, and Bridget McDonagh. Whoever raises the most money will lead June’s parade – a beloved tradition since 1904.
Christmas wants to get more young people involved with local resources. “I’m doing it for my community. Dorchester means everything to me,” she stated with conviction.
Since 1630, when the first people settled here, the parade has grown into a huge street celebration. Now it fills the neighborhood with music, bright floats, and happy locals coming together.
While Gorman is focused on fixing community issues like mental health and transportation, McDonagh has come up with a creative campaign. She’s running Boys & Girls Club events and offering workout class opportunities to get more votes.
Team Walter is keeping busy. They’ve started a GoFundMe page and set up a popular kissing booth at the Ashmont Farmers Market, while social media lights up with updates about the four-legged candidate.
The money raised keeps the huge event running smoothly, covering important costs like security and insurance. Past parades have featured everything from amazing performances to local groups marching together proudly.
