Three Winter Storms to Hit Massachusetts This Week
Three winter storms will slam into Massachusetts in the next week. The first arrives Tuesday night, kicking off a rough stretch of winter weather.
Starting Tuesday evening, snow covers areas south of the Mass Pike, with the most accumulation happening along the south coast, Cape, and Islands. Then Thursday brings the second storm – starting as snow, changing to a messy mix of ice and rain. The final storm hits from Saturday to Monday morning, bringing potentially serious winter weather, though details are still scarce this far out.
These back-to-back storms come from a fast-moving Pacific jet stream. While none of the storms looks huge on its own, quick bursts of mixed winter weather might catch people unprepared.
Snow totals at Logan Airport are at 21.1 inches this winter – much less than the usual 28.6 inches. The last storm dropped 4.3 inches on February 8-9.
Boston neighborhoods got hit with up to 7 inches in last week’s storm. February typically brings about 15 days of snow to the area.
City and state workers are ready with plows and salt trucks prepared for a busy week. They’ll have to handle three rounds of cleanup one after another.
Keep an eye on weather updates and change travel plans, say local officials. Thursday looks particularly dangerous as temperatures swing up and down, turning roads icy with a mix of snow, ice and rain.
