For 102 years, the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) has been a beloved baseball tradition, showcasing top college baseball talent. It is one of the longest-running amateur athletic organizations in American sports history.
Since its beginning, the CCBL has contributed to the professional development of 2,000 former players, many of whom were originally scouted playing on the Cape. Close to 350 CCBL alumni appeared on MLB rosters last year. Notable MLB professionals have included Justin Smoak, Steve Pearce, Jackie Bradley Jr., Aaron Judge, and Matt Wieters.
Over the past century, the CCBL has fostered a sense of community. Players live with their host families and connect with Cape Cod residents. CCBL games are admission-free, and the league attracts thousands of people each summer who come out to catch the local teams in action.
Retired educator and coach Mark "Pathfinder" Epstein has written a new book about the CCBL titled "Cape Dreams: A Season with the Brewster Whitecaps." Due to be published in April, the book chronicles the story of the 2024 season for the Brewster Whitecaps.
In the book, Epstein describes how MLB scouts spend their summers in Cape Cod seeking the next Ryan Braun, Sean Casey, Aaron Judge, Chase Utley, and Billy Wagner.
"While reading this once-in-a-generation classic, you will learn about the players who were brought together in the summer of 2024 by their manager, the forever lovable Jamie Shevchik," a description for the book noted. "Get on top of one of the many up-and-down tidal waves as this group of lovable characters will take you on one of [their] most unforgettable journeys that became almost historic."
