The state's largest health plan is offering free $20 Bluebikes credits to commuters affected by MBTA service disruptions in 2025. As planned MBTA maintenance work impacts transportation for thousands of people in the Boston area, the Bluebikes credits program through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts will deliver an added mobility option for Greater Boston residents.
The offer, which Blue Cross is fully funding, complements the City of Boston's free unlocks offer tied to select MBTA closures by giving people access to ebikes.
Beginning Monday, March 31, individuals can redeem the free $20 Bluebikes credit by entering code BLUECROSSMAMBTA in the "Rewards" section of the Bluebikes App. The credit will apply to pedal and ebike trips. Users will be able to access Bluebikes' 500 stations across 13 municipalities, including Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville, and Watertown.
Credits are available while supplies last; all credits must be used by Dec. 31.
"At Blue Cross, we are committed to providing communities with reliable and flexible transportation options," said Jeff Bellows, vice president of corporate citizenship and public affairs at Blue Cross, in a media release. "As the title sponsor of Bluebikes, we're proud to provide this free credit to help commuters navigate MBTA closures, while supporting active mobility and well-being for our communities."
According to the media release, the Bluebikes system is municipally owned by 13 cities and towns in eastern Massachusetts. The cities of Boston, Cambridge, Everett, and Somerville, as well as the Town of Brookline, jointly manage the program. Lyft operates the service through a contract with Blue Cross.
