The Woman Who Bought My Rug On Facebook Marketplace Wants A Refund Just Because My Dog Peed On It
Jason recently sold a rug that he had spent a lot of money buying on Facebook Marketplace. The woman who bought it has been harassing him ever since. She says that she should get a refund because he didn’t disclose that his dog had peed on the rug and it was dirty and stained. But he insists the rug was listed as “as is” which means buyer beware. He paid $500 for the rug and sold it to her for $30, which he has no intention of giving back. Should you be able to ask for a refund if you buy something “as is” on Facebook Marketplace?
Should You Be Able To Ask For A Refund On An “As Is” Item On Facebook Marketplace?
Jonathan: Hey, Jason.
Jason: Hey, what’s going on?
Jonathan: Hey. So, you are upset somebody is bothering you? Harassing you on Facebook Marketplace. What happened?
Jason: I sold this woman a rug, and she’s harassing me. I posted a really nice rug. I paid $500 for the rug. I posted it on FB. Facebook Marketplace.
Jonathan: On FB. Yeah, that’s what the kids are calling it FB marketplace.
Jason: Facebook marketplace.
Jonathan: Yeah, yeah, yeah. For all you boomers, you don’t know.
Jason: I sold it for $30 because my dog has some kind of incontinence problem and peed on the rug. I don’t know why, but he peed on it.
Ayla: Like, a lot? Like he peed on it a lot. Or was there just one stain?
Jason: The rug has been damaged. Pretty good. So my thought is this is a very expensive rug and somebody could go have it deep cleaned an work out the issues if they want a nice rug. I just need to get rid of it. And so this woman’s harassing me. She just won’t stop. I posted it as it is and she thinks that isn’t fair.
Jonathan: So she bought it?
Ayla: She bought it for 30 bucks. And you put in the post as is.
Jason: Right, knowing full well that it’s a really expensive rug and that somebody would take it and probably have it cleaned and put it where they want it. Right.
Jonathan: Okay, so let me ask you this. When you posted it on Facebook Marketplace, did you have a recent picture of the thing?
Jason: It was an older picture. I don’t think it was recent, but I mean.
Ayla: Well, did you put in the description then that it had been peed on?
Jason: No, I didn’t put that. I don’t think.
Ayla: So, why wouldn’t you disclose that?
Jonathan: Because people really wouldn’t buy it.
Ayla: Isn’t that hazardous waste at that point? Like it’s someone’s urine on?
Jason: Yeah. You can get urine cleaned out of stuff.
Ayla: But you shouldn’t have to. I feel like those things should be disclosed. Almost like it should be disclosed that there was a murder that took place in the house that you’re about to buy.
Jonathan: You don’t have to. You don’t have to.
Ayla: Because if nobody would buy it, shouldn’t you? Morally speaking?
Jonathan: Why?
Jason: Because it is as good as it is.
Jonathan: Right? It’s not like he said there’s nothing wrong with the rug. Come get it. He said it’s as is, which is just a general blanket.
Ayla: And then he used an older picture of the rug, which is not representative of what it looks like right now. But again, it’s still as if there’s pee all over it, and there’s stains and it smells and I’m on this woman’s side. I’d be pretty pissed if I spent a cent. Not if it’s really grossly damaged.
Jonathan: Why would you buy something as it is then?
Ayla: Because you see the photo and then it was probably rolled up when she got it, right? You rolled it up for her so she couldn’t see. And she’s trusting the pictures. And then she brings it home and she’s like, gag. No.
Jonathan: Well, that’s what you get for buying something on Facebook Marketplace as it is.
