Top music movies of all time, let's get into it. Movies about music are the best movies to me.
Movies about music have always been popular, and it's not hard to see why. Music has the power to move us emotionally and transport us to a different time and place. When combined with the visual medium of film, music can create a powerful and unforgettable cinematic experience.
Sometimes it's a biopic about a famous musician like the movies Ray, Walk the Line and I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Other times it's a fictional story centered around a band like the show, Daisy Jones & The Six. Or even a musical comedy like School of Rock. Movies about music have a way of touching our hearts and leaving us with a lasting impression. Here are some reasons why movies about music are the best.
They Tell Stories That Resonate With Us
Music is often a reflection of the human experience, and movies about music are no different. These films tell stories that are relatable and emotionally resonant. From the struggles of trying to make it in the music industry to the highs and lows of fame, these films explore themes that are universal and timeless.
They Introduce Us To New Music
One of the great things about movies about music is that they expose us to new artists and genres. Whether it's a biopic about a legendary musician or a fictional story about an up-and-coming band, these films often feature a soundtrack that showcases a wide range of music. I learned more about Ray Charles' music through the movie Ray than I did on his records.
They Feature Incredible Performances
Movies about music often feature incredible performances from actors who have learned to play instruments or sing for their roles. These performances can be mesmerizing and add an extra layer of authenticity to the film. We knew Beyonce could sing and dance, but seeing her in Dreamgirls was next level.
They Capture The Spirit Of A Particular Era
Many movies about music are set in a specific time period and capture the spirit and energy of that era. From the 1950s rock and roll scene to the punk rock explosion of the 1970s, these films transport us to a different time and place and allow us to experience the music and culture of that era. That's why movies like Grease were so popular. It brought you back to the times of high school cliques and muscle cars.
They Inspire Us
Movies about music have the power to inspire us to pursue our own creative passions. Whether it's picking up a guitar and starting a band or simply listening to more music, these films can inspire us to connect with our own creativity and explore our own passions. When I saw Annie for the first time I knew I wanted to be a singer. That's the power of music.
My Top 9 Movies About Music
Yes, these are subjective. But I believe these nine movies are some of the best ever made. Do you agree?
9. A Star Is Born
Listen, A Star Is Born is a classic movie, but it's already been done a few times. The reason this was ranked 9th is truly because I left the movie theater being SO mad at Bradley Cooper's character. I guess that's a sign of great acting. But it was almost tooooo good.
8. Yesterday
"Yesterday" was a clever movie about The Beatles. A struggling musician somehow wakes up and discovers that no one has discovered The Beatles yet. So he writes and performs all of the songs that the band recorded and becomes super famous. Realistic? Absolutely not. Entertaining? Yes (terday).
7. Pitch Perfect
Pitch Perfect is a great movie about A Cappella, and the love of it. A-Ca-squeeze me? Yes, A Cappella...the singing of songs without instruments. The vocal box is your instrument and you must use it wisely! This movie stars Anna Kendrick, Rebel Wilson and Elizabeth Banks. It's funny, but they should have just stopped at Pitch Perfect 1 and not done a bunch of sequels.
6. Dreamgirls
Watching Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson sing their hearts out was a highlight for me when that movie came out. The storyline was great. The costumes were fabulous. And their voices were angelic! Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy also did a great job in the film.
5. 8 Mile
"Vomit on his sweater already, mom's spaghetti." What a classic line from the song, "Lose Yourself" that Eminem raps in the movie, "8 Mile." When the movie came out it was really eye opening to watch a cinematic interpretation of Eminem's life.
4. School of Rock
This goes down as one of Jack Black's best work. School of Rock was entertaining for people of all ages. It's about a teacher that teaches young kids all about rock and roll. And their final project is a big musical showcase! Jack Black was funny, charismatic and entertaining.
3. Walk The Line
A movie about Johnny Cash and June Carter? Sign me up. I love the way Reese Whitherspoon sounds singing the role of June Carter. I also thought she did a great job portraying June's comedic side on stage. Obviously the love story between Johnny and June is quite popular, but Reese and Joaquin did a fantastic job portraying it on the silver screen.
2. Sister Act 2
I grew up loving this movie and listening to the soundtrack. The movie stars Whoppie Goldberg. She's an escaped convict who finds a new home in a convent. She ends up being a music teacher at a run down high school and teaches the high schoolers how to sing. I owned this movie on VHS and would rewind "O Happy Day" over and over again before heading off to school. If that moment in the movie doesn't pump you up, what does?
1. The Greatest Showman
Where do I begin on this movie? It's the best music movie ever made. First of all the cast is spectacular. Hugh Jackman plays the role of PT Barnum. It's loosely based off of his life and the start of America's first circus. But it's filled with so much more than that. The original songs are chart-toppers. The storyline will make you cry. It's a movie for all ages and will go down in history as one of the "greatest" of all time! Plus, Zac Efron, Zendaya, and Michelle Williams do a killer job as well!
