Can the Kansas City Chiefs save a marriage? Derrick has gambled himself into a hole. After winning for awhile, he started losing. And he kept losing. And now he’s lost his and his wife’s savings. So he has come up with a plan. He bought his wife an expensive broach for an anniversary a few years back. He’s going to pawn it and bet it all on the Kansas City Chiefs this Sunday to win back his losses and quit gambling. Is this a good plan?
Jonathan: We have Derrick on the phone with us. Hey, Derrick. How are you doing?
Derrick: Hey, you guys. I’m okay.
Jonathan: Just okay?
Derrick: If I’m being honest, I’m not, but that’s why I’m calling you.
Jonathan: Okay, so what’s the problem Derrick? I know you like me, like to dabble in a little bit of sports gambling, but I think that you are having problems with it that I fortunately have not. What’s going on?
Derrick: Yeah. So, things got away from me a little bit. You know, I started, I bet 20 bucks on something, and I won. And then I kept going, and I lost some. And then I won something that I lost.
Ayla: So that literally sounds like gambling.
Jonathan: Yeah. You won, then you win and you’re like I won. So I’m going to bet it all on this one because I’m on a hot streak, baby.
Derrick: Right. It got away from me because I now have essentially lost mine and my wife’s life savings.
Ayla: Oh my God.
Derrick: I’ve lost about $12,000.
Jonathan: Okay, wow.
Ayla: I’m so sorry.
Jonathan: Do you have a 401K and stuff like that besides that?
Derrick: I mean yeah.
Ayla: You’re getting into the nitty. gritty, getting into the real life savings.
Jonathan: This is like your rainy day money. Yeah. So wow, $12,000. A lot of money. Was that all in one go or has this has been building up over time.
Derrick: This has been kind of building up over time. But, the more I lost, the more I bet on things to try to get back there. And the thing is, my wife doesn’t know yet. So this is where I’m at. I’ve got a plan to get it all back is basically.
Ayla: What is the plan, if you don’t mind me asking?
Derrick: So, I got my wife an antique brooch for our five year anniversary, and I bought it. My plan is I pawn it, use that money. And I bet it all on the Kansas City Chiefs because they’re underdogs.
Jonathan: For 3.5 points. Sure.
Derrick: Yeah. And so you know hopefully I’ll win it back.
Ayla: The savings? Oh man. Okay.
Jonathan: First of all, thank you for having faith in my favorite team.
Ayla: And faith in us to take your story.
Jonathan: If you had to bet on anybody with your marriage, I would bet on Patrick Mahomes, too. But. Jeez, Louise, buddy, you’re going to pawn the brooch to try to make the money back and then put it back in the savings. And then you’re not going to spend anymore. You’re done with gambling after this.
Derrick: I mean, I’ve got to be right.
Jonathan: I 100% hate to fuel this and make you feel like this is going to work. And I 100% believe that you’re going to win. At the same time, what are you going to do? What happens if you don’t? What if Mahomes gets injured on the third play, God forbid, he tears an ACL or something like that? And the Chiefs lose.
Ayla: He loses. He’s screwed.
Derrick: I mean, like that’s a problem.
Ayla: You’ve got to tell the wife.
Derrick: I guess. I mean she’s going to have to find out eventually.
Ayla: When she goes to put the brooch on for sure. Hey honey, where’s the brooch you got me for our five year wedding anniversary, I pawned it honey, I’m sorry. But what else does he do? I think he’s got to do it.
Jonathan: You think he has to do it?
Ayla: I think he’s got too.
Jonathan: I think you just tell her right now. I think you tell her right now before you start pawning stuff. He’s in the whole big mess. At least this gambling is legal now, so you don’t have to worry about losing a kneecap. But Derrick, thank you so much. Good luck.
