Kruser’s Local Catch

The pipes on Rhode Island’s Nick Casey were meant to be heard. The tone, the depth and the intensity are nearly otherworldy. Warning: lisening to the timbre in Nick’s voice can practically transport you in time. His approach to music is a more traditional vibe, and he manages to make vintage edgy. This singer/songwriter is the real deal and he’s my Local Catch of the Week: Nick Casey from West Greenwich, RI.

Nick is excited to be releasing a new song from his album, “Ghosts Like Me.” Be on the look out for an original he’s most proud of called “Elizabeth.” In the meantime, below you can hear his current, “In My Country.” Inspired by his musician parents, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash, Casey is fully embracing his own music career. You’ll find him performing all over New England, when he’s not fishing, hiking or painting houses.

  • A Nick Number

Listen to Nick Casey’s “In My Country,” here. It was written with fellow country singer/songwriter, Mickey Lamantia and their friend Dave Martel. Nick relayed, “We were hanging around before a show, in Kansas, and Mickey decided he wanted to write a “hit” for me. So, the three of us wrote the song together in about an hour!”

Be on the lookout for a new song from Nick coming soon. The next single, “Elizabeth,” will be available on all streaming platforms, He shared, “My upcoming single is a story about two people who can’t be together because of the distance between them. It was inspired by something that happened to me. It took a long while to perfect the lyrics and melody but, it’s one the songs I am most proud of!”

  • A Converstation with Casey

    • Grew up in: West Greenwich, RI
    • Now lives in: Still sitting in West Greenwich, RI
    • Current album: “Ghosts Like Me” and a new single, “Elizabeth” coming soon! Current single: “In My Country”
    • What lead you to music: Both of my parents were musicians when I was a kid. My father performed in a blues band and my mother is a folk singer. Somewhere down the road, I found a video of Bruce Springsteen performing and it made me want to learn the guitar.
    • How long have you been performing: Just under ten years.
    • First country song you learned: “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash
    • How would you describe your sound: It’s definitely rooted in the more traditional sounds of country music. With my band behind me, we’ve created our own, unique sound.
    • Who inspires you: Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and Cody Jinks
    • If you are a band, how did you get your name: Nick Casey and the Whole Damn Band. We could not decide on a band name for years. I wanted to be the “Space Cowboys” or the “Mama’s Boys”. When I promoted our band shows, I would always say, “with the whole damn band” and my guitar player, Ryan Tremblay, said, “let’s just call ourselves that.” Not the most exciting story but we haven’t given up on it!
    • Awards/accolades: Nominated for two New England Music Awards in 2022, “New Act of the Year” and “Rising Star: Rhode Island”. 2018 Mohegan Sun “Locals Live” Winner.
    • Dream duet partner: Eric Church
    • All- time favorite country song: “Mr. Misunderstood” Eric Church, “Keep It Between the Lines” Sturgill Simpson
    • First country concert: Brad Paisley
    • If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing: Firefighter
    • Day Job: House Painter
    • Most proud moment: In 2019, I was invited to play the main stage at the Washington County Fair. We opened for HARDY. It’s my hometown fair. It is also where I told my parents, “if I ever ‘make it’ in music, I would want to play on that stage”. Seeing them in the crowd from the stage was the coolest, full circle moment.
    • Crazy thing that happened in your music career: Last year I was playing my hometown bar across from a truck stop. This truck driver from Georgia happened to stop in for dinner. He thought someone was ripping off my music before he realized it was actually me. After the show, he told me his family back home listens to my album all the time!
    • Other things you like to do: Fly fishing and hiking.
    • Fun facts: I am a master at the pogo stick.
    • Mantra: Just keep your head down.
