Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Boy, that expression came to life yesterday for Red Sox catcher Christian Vasquez. Before the start of the game in Houston last night, the Red Sox organization traded Vasquez to the team he was about to play. So literally he had to walk down the hall to report to his new team. This, according to a report from CBS Sports, via ESPN. Longtime Red Sox player Vazquez was traded in the middle of an interview, during batting practice in Houston.
Sure, we all know it’s a business, but it’s also human beings, who’ve developed tight relationships with teammates, and communities they’ve come to be a part of. Not to mention, their families who are certainly affected by a trade. And to see Vazquez’ facial expression of sadness and a little shock didn’t set well with Red Sox Nation.
Before the longtime Red Sox player was traded in mid interview, the World Series winning catcher spent at total of 13 years in the Red Sox organization. He was drafted in the ninth round in 2008 and became a valued and reliable member of the team. Christian has caught 651 games with the franchise, becoming the fifth place record holder in franchise history. #7 made his MLB debut with the Red Sox in 2014, and earned a ring as part of the 2018 World Series champions.
