My Date Had The Audacity To Pull Out My Chair For Me At Dinner So I Left And Went Home
Hilary went on a date recently with a man who was a little older. She normally doesn’t date older guys, but he seemed nice so she gave it a shot. But she changed her mind very quickly when she walked in and her date got up to “pull out my chair” for her to sit. She felt like that was very old fashioned and patronizing and was a red flag. So she got up and left.
Is It A Red Flag For A Date To Pull Out My Chair?
Jonathan: Today for panic button we have Hilary. Hey, Hilary.
Hilary: Hi.
Jonathan: Hi. So, Hillary, your problem is you don’t like old school men.
Hilary: Well, it’s not that I don’t like old school men. I think there’s particular attributes that I could leave.
Ayla: I just don’t like chivalry.
Jonathan: Yeah, that’s dead to you. So what happened? You were going out on a date with a guy that you met online, and he did something gross. What happened?
Hilary: Yeah, I would say he was an older gentleman. I don’t want to sound crazy.
Ayla: Like, was he a grandpa? Or just couple of years older?
Jonathan: Silver fox?
Hilary: Yeah. Like a silver fox. Exactly. And I show up and almost right away knew that this wasn’t going to work. I walk over and he immediately stands up to pull out my chair for me. Which almost was immediately where I was like, okay, this isn’t going to work.
Jonathan: I get it.
Hilary: And then he introduces himself, right? Shakes my hand and kisses my hand.
Jonathan: Okay.
Ayla: Like a queen. Yeah.
Jonathan: Like hello. And so what did you do? You sat down and had a lovely meal?
Ayla: And you’re married now?
Hilary: I walked out.
Jonathan: Oh, she walked out. You walked out? Yeah? Good for you.
Ayla: Because he pulled out your chair and kissed you on your hand?
Jonathan: Good for you. This guy’s a serial killer.
Hilary: I was like. This is such a an act.
Jonathan: This is such a performance by this guy. It’s creepy on a first date.
Ayla: I actually am genuinely confused. Do you think the act of a man pulling out a chair for a woman is an act of performance?
Jonathan: You know where I see it? Every single day. Kelly and Mark.
Ayla: I think it’s nice.
Jonathan: Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. They come out and they always do this. Oh, my God, there’s an audience here today.
Ayla: Oh, wonderful.
Jonathan: And then they go over to their seats, and he pulls out her chair. And it’s always like he’s got this look on his face. Like, that’s right, I’m that kind of husband. And pulls out her chair and she sits down.
Ayla: And probably appreciates it.
Jonathan: It’s disgusting.
Ayla: She’s probably excited that she’s married to that kind of a guy.
Jonathan: It’s because she can’t pull out her own. You know what, Kelly Ripa actually might be too tiny to pull out of her own chair. That might be fair.
Ayla: All women can pull out their own chairs. But it’s nice when a man does it for you. That’s chivalry, guys. Chivalry hopefully is not dead. You know it. In Hillary’s case it is. But for me, it’s not. I would it love for me.
Jonathan: I don’t think I’ve ever pulled my wife’s chair out.
Ayla: I would love it.
Jonathan: I’ve sat down and pushed her chair out with my foot. That’s as far as I’m going. That’s as far as I’m going. But you know what? Who am I to speak? I’m not happily married for 17 years. What do I know?
