Alert! Alert! The Sumner Tunnel is closing for the next two years. I’m not sure about you, but I just received an email from EZDriveMA explaining that the Sumner Tunnel will be shut down for construction this summer. I will tell you right now, that I am NOT happy about this!

We get it, the Sumner Tunnel is old. It was built in the 1930’s and it needs a major upgrade. And if you’ve ever traveled to or from Logan Airport, you’ve most likely taken the Sumner Tunnel to get out of the city. MA Department of Transportation is already doing construction on the tunnel in the evenings, but apparently they haven’t finished the job and they need more time.

What can we expect? How long are the closures taking place? Here is everything we know about the “Sumner Tunnel Project” based on the email that I received. Read below!

Good afternoon,

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is hosting two virtual public information meetings to update the public on the first of two full closures of the Sumner Tunnel. The first closure will take place from July 5, 2023 to August 31, 2023. The second closure will take place next summer from July 2024 to August 2024.
These extended closures will have major impacts to regional traffic, abutters, travelers, businesses, and Logan Airport. These meetings will discuss project goals, construction activities and travel options for the public during the closure.
Details for the two meetings are as follows:

• Wednesday, May 24, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
• Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
• Attend: https://www.mass.gov/sumner-tunnel/events?_page=1

Both meetings will provide the same information. Holding two meetings is an effort by MassDOT to accommodate everyone’s schedules as best possible. Meeting attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and offer comments. Spanish and Arabic interpretation will be available at both meetings.
All residents, abutters, local business owners, and interested commuters are invited to attend. All attendees who sign into the meeting and provide an email address will be entered into the project’s email database to receive project updates. Prior to the meetings, if you have specific questions or concerns for the project team, please email us: [email protected]

Regards,
Sumner Tunnel Project
