Let’s start a fight this Thanksgiving.

Every year, the internet is flooded with advice on how to avoid heated arguments at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Don’t bring up politics! Steer clear of religious discussions. And for heaven’s sake, avoid diving into the murky waters of family relationships. It’s the standard playbook for maintaining a peaceful holiday gathering.

But this year, I’ve decided to break away from the conventional wisdom and inject a dose of humor into the festivities by suggesting 20 creative ways to start a fight at Thanksgiving dinner. After all, who says holiday gatherings have to be all about avoiding controversy?

Perhaps you’ve always harbored a secret disdain for your mother-in-law’s cooking skills. Or maybe you cringe at your uncle’s polarizing political views. And let’s not forget the elephant in the room—your brother’s seemingly inexplicable 45-pound weight gain since last year’s feast. These are just a few examples of the myriad ways you can shake up the dinner table conversation. Besides, inciting a bit of family drama might be the perfect distraction from the less-than-homemade dish you’re attempting to pass off as your culinary masterpiece. (Nice try, we know it came from Whole Foods).

While the typical advice on steering clear of touchy subjects has its merits, there’s something liberating about injecting a bit of mischief into the Thanksgiving festivities. So, this year, consider breaking the mold, embracing the unexpected, and maybe, just maybe, adding a dash of controversy to the holiday season. After all, what’s Thanksgiving without a side of laughter and a sprinkle of good-natured chaos?

(Disclaimer: Be a good person and don’t actually start a fight at Thanksgiving!) The mere thought of these playful provocations can add a touch of levity to the holiday season. After all, laughter is often the best remedy for diffusing tension and fostering a sense of togetherness.
