Study Proves This Recent Popular Song Led To a Decrease In Actual Suicides
More stuff like this, please. GREAT to see music making an actual difference. It’s not country but it is very cool – researchers from the Medical University of Vienna have concluded that the song “1-800-273-8255” by hip hop artist Logic released in 2018 contributed to both an increase in calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and a drop in actual suicides.
1-800-273-8255 is the actual phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. The study authors assessed any associations between the song and two main statistics: Daily calls placed to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and the number of daily suicides across the country. The team also analyzed Twitter activity to gauge audience attention over one month. The study revealed that during the 34 day period of time observed and studied that people placed an additional 9,915 calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and there were 245 fewer suicides than average within the same period.
These are great findings supporting the importance of proactively discussing mental health.
