It's been there for 300 years, and yet somehow I have managed to never have dined at this historic Massachusetts inn. Longfellow's Wayside Inn is Massachusetts oldest operating inn in the U.S. and also has a super popular restaurant. I need to make reservations.

It's hard to image that the Wayside Inn has been serving New Englanders since 1716! Because it's the oldest operating inn in the U.S. this Inn is considered a Massachusetts Historic landmark. It has also earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. Talk about longevity. They must be doing something right, and I can't wait to find out for myself.

The Menu

The fare is classic New England at this historic inn. According to Only in Massachusetts, favorites here include baked scrod, prime rib beef au jus, and chicken pot pie. Yum. There is nothing like comfort food in a cozy atmosphere. And The Wayside sits on over 100 acres in beautiful Sudbury, Massachusetts.

What really looks interesting on their menu is a drink taken from the Colonial era. It's called the Coow Woow! Gotta love the name. And according to Only in Massachusetts is said to be "the country's first-ever mixed drink dating back to 1664. It's made with white rum and ginger brandy."  Sounds like some great sipping before dinner.

Lunch is offered Monday through Saturday at Longfellow's Wayside Inn, while dinner is served 7 days a week! They do have breakfast available for Inn overnight guests. But can we just talk about the desserts for a moment? The Inn is famous for their Deep Dish Apple Pie. But customers also rave about their old timey New England favorite of Baked Indian Pudding. It's made with cornmeal and molasses and served warm with vanilla ice cream. Yes, please! By the way, I think you will find the prices to be relatively reasonable.

Now that the cool weather is here, comfort food is calling! You can check out this beautiful and historic place for yourself. Make your reservations and maybe I will see you at Massachusetts' oldest operating inn in U.S. that also has a super popular restaurant.

February 23rd is National Chili Day and the folks at Lovefood.com have done their homework and have rated the best restaurant chili in all 50 states.

Here’s the best chili you can get in each New England state

Connecticut

Award-winning Chili, The Vanilla Bean Café, Pomfret

Beef is slow-cooked  and chunky veggies. It's served in generous portions, and topped with tortilla chips, cheese and scallions.

Maine

Maine: Beef & Bean Chili, Sea Dog Brewing Company, various locations

I can vouch for this chili! My wife and I traveled to the Saco, Maine location and it is incredible! It's made with both beef and beans, and finished with plenty of pico de gallo, cheese and tortilla chips. While it's just fine served from a bowl, it's even better when piled onto a burger with plenty of sour cream and fried onions.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island: Seasonal Chili, Julian's, Providence

Mainly a brunch restaurant, but the seasonal chili is a must have and is always a customer favorite when it's on the menu, maybe it should always be there!

Vermont

Vermont: Ribeye Chili, Langdon Street Tavern, Montpelier

It's made with chunky rib-eye steak and kidney beans, and the sauce is extra rich and smoky. So, if you're heading to the Green Mountain State, this chili is a winter must have

New Hampshire

New Hampshire: 5-Alarm Chili, Red Arrow Diner, Manchester

The Red Arrow Diner it's become something of a New Hampshire institution. The menu is huge, but you can't beat the 5-Alarm Chili which, as the name suggests, is extra hot. It typically comes smothered in cheese sauce and customers love it.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts: Texas State Penn Chili, All Star Sandwich Bar, Cambridge

The name says Sandwich, but the chili is the real star of the menu. It's Texas-style (that's all brisket and no beans) and it's got a real kick. Add some sour cream and have a big hunk of cornbread too!
