A Rare Piece Of Boston Bruins History Is Up For Auction
Listen up Bruins fans. You may want to hold off on that next home improvement project because a rare piece of Boston Bruins history is up for auction! You could own the oldest original Boston Bruins banner.
We Bruins fans are the most passionate bunch of sports fans, so I knew you’d be interested in this gem. When the old Boston Garden came down in 1998, the auction house, Leland’s was there to witness. Now they are in possession of the 1927-1928 original banner from their Division Championship. That was the year that saw the enormous potential of this team. The Bs went on to win the Stanley Cup the following year.
This rare piece is described on the auction website as, “Massive, magnificent, and historic, this 1927-28 Boston Bruins Division Champions banner hung at the venerable Boston Garden until its demolition in 1998. Measuring roughly 148″ high (over 12 feet) and approximately 95″ across, this bold yellow treasure is mounted from a wood beam extending about 101″ across. Black letters measuring 17″ high and 10” across spell out BOSTON BRUINS, below which is the famed “spoked-B” logo (a sizeable 44″ in diameter) of the Original Six franchise. In smaller black letters below is “DIVISION CHAMPS 1927-28.”
History Behind The Banner Year
A little more history behind the bold, beautiful banner is 1927-1928 was the season the Bruins won their very first American Division Championship…The historic division championship was led by future Hall of Famers Eddie Shore and Dit Clapper. And, there was there was the unparalleled goaltending from Hal Winkler. Winkler went on to break a franchise record, which still holds today. Winkler had 15 shutouts that season. And even though the team didn’t fair well in the playoffs, the ground was set for the following year.
Back to reality. Ok, the auction bidding starts at $5000. But maybe you can pool with friends or family and share the love, share the banner. Or maybe you’ll win the lottery! That’s what I’m banking on. Seriously, it is a cool and extremely rare piece of of Boston Bruins history up for auction now through March 16. Good luck Bruins fans!
