Midwives At South Shore Hospital Swear This Meal Puts Women Into Labor…. So I Tried It
My neighbor, Jayne*, is a labor and delivery nurse at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, MA and she swears that the secret to inducing labor is eggplant parm.
Jayne absolutely loves her job. She enjoys helping the doctors deliver babies. And she loves setting up the rooms for the future parents. Even though she went through months and months of intense schooling to become a labor and delivery nurse, you’d think that she’d be tired and overwhelmed. Instead, she appreciated every second of her schooling and the knowledge that it now gives her in the delivery room.
At the time when I gave birth to my last child in 2022, Jayne was just shadowing the doctors and nurses in the hospital. She had not yet earned her degree or her position at South Shore Hospital. But regardless of her “status” inside the hospital, she was my “go-to” girl for any pregnancy questions and post partum help. That’s what neighbors are for, right?
I remember one time my blood pressure was really high and she personally walked down an electronic blood pressure monitor to my house. (I still have it sitting in my bathroom closet. Sorry Jayne, I have to give that back to you someday!) Now, Jayne is a certified nurse at the hospital and she has continued to be my go-to for anything and everything maternity-related.
Midwives Swear By Eggplant Parm To Induce Labor
I am now just 7 days away from my due date and I’m trying everything possible to get this baby out of my belly. There are a lot of old wives tales, and let me tell you, I’ve tried almost all of them. I’ve tried the reflexology foot massage, the sexy time with the husband, spicy foods, walking, thinking happy thoughts, laughing, you name it, I’ve tried it.
But then Jayne texted me saying, “Have you tried eating eggplant parm?” I said, I had not tried eating eggplant parm and truthfully, I was very confused as to why she’d suggest that. She said that most of the midwives who deliver at South Shore Hospital swear that eggplant parmesan makes women go into labor. I needed to get to the bottom of this.
Why Eggplant Parm Is Believed To Put Women In Labor
I did some research on this and there’s an Italian restaurant in Atlanta, GA called Scalini’s that prides themselves on their eggplant parm putting women into labor. They’re so proud in fact that they have an entire wall in their restaurant dedicated to photos of babies whose mothers went into labor after eating their dish.
Word about the eggplant parm must have spread nationwide, because the midwives here at South Shore Hospital say that if you eat eggplant parm, you’ll go into labor within 48 hours. When I asked Jayne about it this is what she texted me.
“It’s not evidence based, but apparently eating eggplant makes people happy which releases a massive amount of natural oxytocin. And eggplant and red sauce can increase digestion which can cause cramping which can also tell the brain to release oxytocin.”
I Tried It
I tried the eggplant parm with 8 days left until my due date. If if actually works then I predict that I will go into labor by this Saturday, May 11th. If I actually do, then this old wives tale should definitely be studied by scientists!!
