I Named My Daughter After My Grandmother But She Hates Her Old Lady Name And Is Going By Something Else
Aubrey named her daughter Ethel after the grandmother that helped raise her and put her through college. But Ethel hates her “old lady name” and has decided to go by her middle name, Riley. Aubrey is very upset because the name Ethel means a lot to her, but her daughter insists she is being made fun of at school and its refusing to use it. Would you force your child to go by a name they hated? Is Ethel really an “old lady name”?

Jonathan: Today for panic button we have Aubrey. What a nice name that is.
Ayla: Aubrey.
Aubrey: Hi. How are you?
Jonathan: Fantastic. So, Aubrey, you have a problem with your daughter disrespecting the name you gave her? What’s going on?
Aubrey: Okay, so she’s 14. And I feel like she’s decided she just hates her name.
Ayla: She probably hates everything right now.
Jonathan: Yeah. I was going to say she’s a 14 year old girl.
Ayla: She hates you. She hates your husband.
Jonathan: We could literally just do a segment on the show called what’s wrong with your 14 year old? Anyway, so she hates everything. But especially right now, a problem is her name.
Aubrey: Essentially her name. And she decided that she’s going to have people call her by her middle name. Friends and stuff.
Jonathan: So, what is the name you named her? Obviously it is a name significant to you.
Aubrey: It is. Yeah. It’s my grandmother.
Jonathan: Your grandmother? And why? Other than fact that she’s your grandmother. Why is that significant?
Aubrey: She was definitely the strongest woman figure for me growing up. She put me through college. She was wonderful.
Ayla: Okay.
Aubrey: Unfortunately, she passed away when my baby was six months old.
Jonathan: Okay.
Aubrey: But I do have a picture of her with the baby.
Jonathan: The two of them together.
Aubrey: Holding my little one. Yeah.
Jonathan: That’s sweet. All right. So what is your daughter’s name and what was your grandmother’s name?
Aubrey: It’s Ethel.
Jonathan: That’s a beautiful name.
Ayla: What’s wrong with that?
Jonathan: Ayla is making a face.
Ayla: Hold on.
Jonathan: It sounds like she’s named after a cavewoman from the clan.
Ayla: I’m just putting myself in the point of view of your 14 year old daughter. What is your daughter’s middle name?
Aubrey: Riley.
Ayla: Oh, I’m totally going by. Riley.
Jonathan: Ayla Marie Brown.
Ayla: Yeah. What if my name was Ethel Marie.
Jonathan: I would go Ethel Merman.
Ayla: I would go by nothing. I would just be like, don’t talk to me.
Jonathan: Great name. I named my son Henry. That’s a classic name. When I named him that, people were like, Henry. That’s kind of like an old man’s name. He’ll grow into it.
Ayla: Yeah, but I don’t know if you can grow into Ethel in 20 years. Because it really is old.
Jonathan: Yeah.
Ayla: My great grandmother’s name was Bertha. I would put Bertha and Ethel in the same category.
Jonathan: Bertha’s like an old German frau. Ethel was like the kind lady next door that bakes you cookies or put you through college.
Ayla: True. I’m not putting your deceased grandmother down. I’m so sorry. I’m just trying to put myself in the point of view of your 14 year old daughter, who’s going through some emotional teenage years right now. And she just wants to be accepted by her friends.
PLUS!!!!!: I promised you a gallery of cute puppies yesterday when we talked about Jason and his rug covered in dog pee. But due to technical difficulties, it didn’t happen. So here’s the puppies I owe you. My apologies!
