Jayden was late for work because it was foggy the other morning. He was recently in a car accident on a foggy day and currently has a bit of a phobia about driving in fog. His boss laid into him when he arrived, even though he sent a text explaining why he would be late. Is Jayden justified in waiting for safer driving conditions to head into work? Or is he being a baby about driving in fog?
Here’s his Email About Driving In Fog:
I have been working at an office for the past 6 months or so. I get along with everyone pretty well and enjoy my work but I had a problem recently. The other morning you might remember it was really foggy outside. I could barely see my hand in front of my face. I went outside and turned my car on but couldn’t drive it because the fog was so thick. It was an obvious hazard.
I’m fine with driving in snow or rain but fog is a little scary for me. I was in a bad car accident about 20 years ago because of fog so I have a hard time dealing with it when it rolls in.
So I texted my boss that I was going to wait until there was a little more light out and the fog had lifted. He didn’t text me back. I waited for about an hour and half and when it lifted I got in the car and drove into work.
When I got in my boss yelled at me about being late. I told him that I texted him to let him know I was going to be late. He said he hadn’t seen it. Then he looked at his phone and got even more mad. “YOU WERE LATE BECAUSE OF FOG?!” He then went on and on about how I’m the project manager and they were all waiting on me to show up to start work.
I tried to explain that driving in fog is dangerous. I didn’t want to get into an accident, and my job is not worth my life. He pointed out all of the other employees who had no problem coming in. I was flabbergasted by this.
It was tense the rest of the day and he’s still being a little weird around me about it. Was I wrong?
Jayden.
