Kara’s dog doesn’t like her boyfriend so she is planning on breaking up with him. Is her dog a better judge of people than her? Would you break up with someone just because your dog doesn’t like them?
Jonathan: Today on panic button we have Kara. Hey, Kara.
Kara: Okay, guys. Good morning.
Jonathan: Good morning. So you have a little bit of a problem involving your boyfriend and a dog, and I guess the ability that the dog might have to see the evil that all of us might contain. What’s going on?
Kara: Yeah, I’m dating this guy, really nice, you know, for a couple of months. But it’s the craziest thing. So my dog, Jake, I’ve had him for seven years. He’s a golden retriever. He’s like my everything. Obviously. I don’t know if you’ve ever had a dog, but you know they become your family.
Ayla: They’re the best.
Jonathan: Yeah. I mean, not my dog. No, he sucks, but I can imagine a golden retriever.
Ayla: He’s probably cute.
Kara: And I have never had this happen to me before, you guys, but he hates my boyfriend. It’s the craziest thing. He won’t let me near him. He growls at him every time he’s in the room. It’s wild. It almost makes the hairs stand up on my arm because he has never reacted like this to anyone. And he can’t be around my boyfriend. He literally freaks out.
Ayla: You know what they say about dogs? That they can definitely sense a person’s personality. My husband’s family had a dog, and every time their cousin would come over, he just sensed a negative spirit.
Jonathan: We did that and its true. Yeah, it’s a bad dude.
Ayla: He was doing bad things, and I just wonder if the dog knew something that no one else could see. I’m with the dog on this one.
Jonathan: Okay, so the dog thinks that. Give some more examples. Like, he growls at him, but does he allow you to be alone in the same room with him?
Kara: No, no, no, that’s the thing he doesn’t. We can’t be in the same room together. If he’s sitting on the couch, Jake will come over and just arch back and lower his head and just bark at us. I mean, it is the creepiest. Also, I’m like, gosh, what does he know that I don’t know?
Ayla: That’s what I’m thinking.
Jonathan: So you’re breaking up with the guy?
Kara: Yeah. People think I’m crazy for it, but honestly, what am I going to do, get rid of him? I’m not getting rid of my dog. Obviously. That’s my dog.
Ayla: But this is the perfect guy according to everyone else in your whole world. Everyone that’s not a dog likes him. And you like him.
Kara: I do, I, I mean, I like him fine, but at this point, every time I see him, I’m like, there’s something now that’s in the air in the back of my mind. Why does my dog hate you?
Jonathan: I don’t know, maybe your dog’s just protective of you, though. He’s never acted like this with any other boyfriend?
Kara: Never. No. Okay. No one else.
Jonathan: My dog is like this with my wife, where he thinks he’s married to my wife, and he’s protective. If I come downstairs and I say, all right, I’m going to bed because I go to bed earlier than everyone else, the dog gets mad at me and starts growling at me like I’m taking my wife away from him. Like I’m saying, we’re all going to bed. But I’m not.
Ayla: I’m just all on your dog’s side.
Jonathan: He’s decided I am deep down evil. But the dog has no reason to think that. I’ve treated him with nothing but love like all dogs.
Ayla: No, that’s what I’m trying to say.
Jonathan: So you’ve broken up with the guy, or you’re going to break up with the guy? Have people in your life told you you’re crazy.
Ayla: Why?
Jonathan: I mean, don’t they buy the explanation that my dog doesn’t like him?
Kara: Yeah, because he’s just so well liked and he’s a nice guy again. He’s done nothing wrong ultimately.
Jonathan: What are you going to tell him when you break up with him?
Kara: I’m going to tell him the truth is that I know my dog.
Jonathan: Just my dog doesn’t like you.
