Donut You Know, It’s National Donut Day!
There’s a “hole” lot to love about a donut.
From the first bite into sweet softness, there’s a feeling of warmth, comfort, and wholesome goodness. It takes you back to your childhood, when getting a donut was truly a treat that you anticipated with great passion and longing.
It’s no wonder this day is celebrated each year! On the first Friday in June, donut fans around the country participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day, celebrating the doughy treat, and honoring the Salvation Army Lassies. The Salvation Army Lassies are the women who served donuts to soldiers during WWI.
The original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served in 1917 by the ladies of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines in Europe, bringing home cooked meals as a morale booster for the troops.
Often, the donuts were cooked in oil inside the American soldiers helmets. This lead to the American infantrymen being referred to as “doughboys.”
So, the next time you put that highly coveted cake to you lips, just know it’s not just a sweet treat…there’s history in the hole.
