Some Of Country’s Best Love Songs
How do you possibly even pick just a few love songs out of the vast catalog in country music?
I have taken on this task for love… and because Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching. We need a playlist!
I have chosen the 8 below that represent different decades, gender, and tempos, but they all share a common theme, or creatively express the sentiment of love through song.
In no particular order…
-
Die A Happy Man- Thomas Rhett
Is there anyone more in love than Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins? Their posts, the songs, their honesty and openness. They have raised the bar for all couples. This is the song that first made us all recognize this truly beautiful love story. This song went to #1 in 2016.
-
It’s Your Love- Tim McGraw (with Faith Hill)
Flashback to 1997 and a song you couldn’t escape. It was #1 on the country charts for 6 weeks! It also became Tim and Faith’s first Top 10 on the all genre Billboard Hot 100! And nobody was hotter than Tim and Faith. The couple that continues to show us that love is hot at any age, also prove the point that although marriage is hard work, it’s all worth it. #couplegoals
-
You’re Still The One- Shania Twain
I don’t know why, but for some reason, finding love songs performed by female country artists is harder than it should be. There are definitely more in the classic country sub-genre (think “I Will Always Love You,” “Crazy,” “Could I Have This Dance?”) Shania Twain, who broke glass, set records, and opened doors for so many women, leads the pack with this 1998 #1 hit that spent 22 weeks on top the country singles sales chart and became a huge crossover hit. Shania earned 2 Grammy Awards for writing and performing the universally understood sentiments in proving others wrong that your love is here to stay. “Ain’t nothing better. We beat the odds together. I’m glad we didn’t listen. Look what we would be missing…”
-
Better Together- Luke Combs
The world loves Luke Combs because he is more like us than most country stars. A real guy who has learned to express his emotions in a real way. Life isn’t all wine and roses, diamonds and tuxedos. Most of the time it’s beer and pretzels, jeans and walking hand in hand. Luke proves his real love for his wife Nicole just perfectly in his current hit. “It’s a match made up in heaven, like good ol’ boys and beer… And me, as long as you’re right here.” Luke speaks to who he is, and who we are.
-
Speechless- Dan + Shay
Dan + Shay have practically built a career on love songs. Just look at their track record. “19 You and Me,” “Show You Off,” “Nothin Like You,” “From The Ground Up,” “Tequila,” “All To Myself,” “10,000 Hours…” The Grammy Award winning duo has a lot of love to give and share. But lyrics like “t’s always on a night like tonight, I thank God you can read my mind…’Cause when you look at me with those eyes, I’m speechless” that land this song on this list, and made it a wedding day favorite. The video even features footage from their own weddings.
-
Bless The Broken Road- Rascal Flatts
Iconic. That’s the best way to describe a song whose lyrics touched so many, that even other artists wanted it on their albums. This quintessential love story made it’s first appearance on a Nitty Gritty Dirt Band album in 1994, it was later recorded by one of the song writers, Marcus Hummon, followed by the band Sons of the Dessert. Singer Melodie Crittendon charted it, as did Carrie Underwood, after her performance of it on American Idol. But it was in 2004, when Rascal Flatts got their hands on it and made it a universal hit. It spent 5 weeks at the top of the charts in 2005 and earned a Grammy for Best Country Song. Who hasn’t been to a wedding where this didn’t play?
-
Heaven- Kane Brown
The story goes… Kane Brown first heard this song at a writers retreat. He was upstairs in a building, working on another song, but heard this gem through the floor. He just had to make it his own, as it reminded him of his girlfriend (now wife), Katelyn. The song steams with pure romanticism. It heated up the charts in late 2017 and became Kane’s 2nd #1 hit in 2018.
-
Cowboy Take Me Away- The Chicks
Full disclosure: I’m including this one because it’s a personal favorite. What young girl doesn’t dream of the handsome cowboy riding up on his horse to take you away to a wonderful life and love. It’s another Marcus Hummon composition (“Bless The Broken Road”) cowritten with Martie Maguire from the Chicks. It went to #1 in the year 2000.
