We’re not talkin McDonalds here. Can you guess New England’s OLDEST fast food restaurant? You probably eat there often! There is NOTHING better than a Sunday afternoon, taking a break with your significant other, ditching responsibilities to hit your favorite mom and pop fast food joint! The best part of living here, there are SO many!!

Comfort Food

Guy Fieri got it right.

His hit Food Network show Diners Drive In’s and Dives, has not only made him a household name, it’s made him a multi-millionaire. Try an $80 MILLION DOLLAR deal over three years! According to Forbes:

The eight-figure deal makes the 53-year-old the top-paid chef on cable TV. His longest-running show Diners, Drive Ins and Dives, which has been on air since 2006, generated more than $230 million in 2020 ad revenue for the Food Network, according to data analytics firm Kantar.

That’s a lot of pancakes. With our changing world, and smart phone data coming at us at lightning speed, we are craving the simpler times.  A Sunday trip to our favorite, go-to hangout for our comfort food is more popular than ever.

Wieners

My go to is Sam’s Olneyville Wieners in Providence, and Coney Island Hot Dogs in Worcester!

So now that I’m hungry, let’s hop in my 1984 Firebird, (I had one) to find New England’s OLDEST Fast Food Restaurant!

  • Vermont-Al's Fry's-Burlington

Opened in the late 1940’s. The FRYS are worth the 3 hour 41 minute drive. Yes, they have salads, but I dare you.

  • Rhode Island-Olneyville New York System, Providence

I make these at home, but not as GREAT as these beauties. The WIENER is smaller than a hot dog. The bun is steamed hot, add the special meat mixture, (too secret to share) onions, some sea salt, and BOOM. FLAVOR HEAVEN. If you eat in your car, it may take on the wiener aroma for a few days.

  • New Hampshire-Moe’s Italian Sandwiches, Portsmouth

I call em, Italian subs or grinders, but I will trust Moe, on this beauty.

Moe’s Italian Sandwiches was born in 1959 when an unsatisfied cheese salesman decided he wanted to go into the restaurant business. Owner Phil Pagano started with just one sandwich: salami and provolone with peppers, onions, dill pickles, olives, tomatoes, and olive oil on a roll. Today the restaurant has multiple locations, all of which offer a much wider variety of sandwiches – though the original remains the gold standard.

  • Connecticut-Louis’ Lunch, New Haven

Louis’ Lunch is responsible for introducing burgers to the world. Established in 1895, the restaurant is recognized by the Library of Congress as the birthplace of the hamburger. It still crafts its old-fashioned burgers with five cuts of meat and serves the patties on slices of white sandwich bread instead of the now-typical bun. I am about to bite this screen.

  • Maine-Red’s Eats, Wiscasset

    Is THAT A LOBSTER ROLL?

Maine’s signature fast food dish is the succulent lobster roll, and they don’t come much better than the rolls at Red’s Eats. The roadside stand has been a Wiscasset mainstay since 1938, specializing in soft buns full of fresh lobster meat with a side of Maine butter. The menu has 70 other items, including hamburgers, fried scallops, and ice cream, but the lobster roll should really not be missed.

  • Massachusetts-Casey’s Diner, Natick

I require that my breakfast potatoes to be deliciously crisp.

One of the oldest operating diners in the United States, Casey’s has existed in one incarnation or another since 1890, when it consisted of a horse-cart with four stools pulled up around it. Its current lunch car location has been around since 1922 and is now run by the fourth generation of the original owner’s family. It falls into the fast food realm because of its specialty steamed hot dogs, known for having a distinctive “snap” when they’re bitten into.
