Everybody loves pancakes!
It’s National Pancake Day! So, what’s the perfect pancake? We put it to the test and asked folks in our listening area what is their favorite type of pancakes. The way people enjoy their pancakes varies from the basic flap jack with maple syrup to the absurd.
A history lesson on the pancake
From Wikipedia: A pancake (or hotcake, griddlecake, or flapjack) is a flat cake, often thin and round, prepared from a starch-based batter that may contain eggs, milk and butter and cooked on a hot surface such as a griddle or frying pan, often frying with oil or butter. It is a type of batter bread. Archaeological evidence suggests people ate pancakes in prehistoric societies.[1]
Greek to me
Ancient Greeks are credited with inventing the pancake. It was as fancy as ours are today, it was much more basic without the frills. Greek pancakes were called Tagenites and were made with wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk, and were served for breakfast. Let’s be honest, they were not making delicious maple syrup in ancient Greece, so they would have flipped out if they ever walked into an Ihop.
Today’s Pancake
Our good old American pancake can be traced back to our British roots. They came across the Atlantic on the Mayflower and have been here ever since. Of course, we Americans like to make everything bigger and better, so the average size of a pancake has gone from roughly the size of an adult palm to now the size of your plate. Sometimes a plate is not big enough to hold them.
