Boston is a city where the “make Way For Ducklings” are as celebrated as Tom Brady’s touchdown passes. Let’s pause our history lessons and sports banter for a moment and turn our attention to something equally deserving: Boston’s breweries.

In this edition of the “Lushy List“, we embark on a beer-laden pilgrimage across Beantown. I promise, you’ll be frothing with excitement at every hoppy turn.

Some cities brag about their skyscrapers, others their beaches. But Boston? Well, we raise our pints high, flaunting our brewskis. From hop-filled havens in the heart of the city to hidden brew gems in the suburbs, Boston’s beer scene is more alive than a Red Sox-Yankees rivalry match.

Boston Breweries Are Really Fun

Why does Boston do breweries so well, you ask? Well, let’s rewind a bit. The city’s rich history has steeped (pun intended!) into its brewing tradition. With old-world influences meeting modern-day creativity, you get a beer culture that’s as diverse as a New England autumn. You’ll find IPAs infused with flavors that’ll play a merry jig on your palate, or stouts so rich they might as well be founding members of the city.

But the beauty of Boston’s breweries doesn’t end at the beer. Oh no! It’s the stories, the characters, the very soul of these establishments that make each pint special. You aren’t just sipping a beer; you’re partaking in a narrative, a Bostonian legacy with each swig.

I’m about to divulge a curated list of breweries that are a must-visit. Hold on to your pint glasses because this is just one drop in the beer barrel of the grand “Lushy List.” If you haven’t noticed, I have done all of the research on where to find all of the breweries and wineries in Massachusetts so you don’t have to!     Multiple Locations including Everett, Boston Beer Gardens, and Boston Lovejoy Wharf

    After hundreds of homebrews and thousands of beers shared, the trio finally quit their day jobs to turn this passionate hobby into something more. They scraped together startup money from friends and family, found a small but suitable warehouse in Everett, and launched Night Shift Brewing (the business) in 2012.

  • Dorchester Brewing Company

  • Democracy Brewing

    Their beer garden collab with Distraction Brewing is now OPEN at Boston City Hall Plaza! “Our mission is to re-create the traditional public house, brew the best beer in Boston, pair it with tasty food, and serve it to you in combination with two great American ideals: democracy, and owning your own business.”

  • Night Shift Brewing Lovejoy Wharf

    Night Shift Brewing has multiple locations ,but the same great beer. At their Lovejoy Wharf location you can see the Zakim bridge and the water at the same time. It’s a perfect summer location for a cool beer.

  • Trillium Beer Garden

    Atlantic Avenue & High St. Boston, MA

    Trillium has their flagship location in Canton, but they have a beer garden along the Rose Kennedy Greenway. They have a food truck that shows up every day (see their website to find out which one is showing up that day). This is a go-to spot for people coming off of the ferry at Rowe’s Wharf. But it’s first come, first serve.

    A day of Boston sightseeing can be capped off with a draft pour at the Trillium Beer Garden on the Greenway. Enjoy a rotation of local food trucks daily.

  • Downeast Cider House

    I am so used to seeing the Downeast cider cans at bars around Boston, that I didn’t even realize they had a location. But they do! And it’s exactly what it says. They are a cider house that specializes in alcoholic ciders. They do have a few exciting flavors like lemonade, watermelon and strawberry. Or if you’re more of a traditional New Englander, you may just want to stick to the original apple cider.

  • Cheeky Monkey Brewing Company

    This brewery is right across from Fenway, but it has a VIBE inside. It almost feels like a dark and mysterious office space. Think big leather couches and ping pong tables. It looks like a place that the “executive type” would want to go to blow off some steam.

  • Castle Island Brewing

    Many times breweries have food trucks that pull up and service food, but Castle Island Brewing has a pizzeria inside that apparently has incredible pizzas. And that’s what “work Daddy Jim” says. (And he’s a stickler on good pizza!)

  • Trillium Brewing Company - Fenway

    I love Trillium beer! We go to their location in Canton often, but their Fenway pop up spot is ideal. It’s perfect for pre-game and it’s connected to the iconic Time Out Market so yo ucan grab food and bring it out to the beer garden. There’s usually live music on the green too. It’s a fun experience, especially on a nice day.

  • Trillium Brewing Company - Fort Point

    I have not been to this location, but I just read that they have $1 oysters on Monday-Friday from 2-4pm. So I will definitely be there someday!!

    This is right outside of Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall. If you’re looking for something perfectly “Boston” then Sam Adams brewery is the spot to take someone to!

  • Harpoon Brewery

    Harpoon Brewery has a huge taproom and seating area at their Boston flagship location. I have been and it’s a cool vibe. They do brewery tours, they have food, and they even have pickleball courts!

    I have never visited this brewery, but they have many on tap. What I like about it though is that you can make a reservation for a table online. Many places, you can’t do that.

  • Lamplighter Brewing Company

    It’s a brewery, but they also have a coffee shop connected to it. Please note that the taproom is 21+ Sundays – Fridays after 6pm, and on Saturdays after 2pm.

    They have 12 beers on tap and small bites daily. Like the last brewing company, I love their logo!! According to their website, “Bone Up Brewing founders Liz and Jared Kiraly met over a shared love of good beer and heavy metal and have been brewing together ever since.”

  • Night Shift Brewing

    The two owners began brewing beer in their living room while in grad school, and quickly outgrew their home. Now they have three locations where people can buy their beers. One in Somerville, one in Allston and Everett. They have live music, beer and events.

    The taproom features rotating beers on tap, packaged beer to-go, outdoor seating, and food from Johnny Pomodoro. You can also play with Legos, classic Nintendo/SNES games, cornhole and shuffleboard! (They really seem to love the Lego theme here!)

  • Remnant Brewing

    Apparently in the morning they serve coffee too! And you won’t break the bank for a coffee, either. Their most expensive item is $4.75. They have two locations: Bow Market and Cambridge.

    “From traditional European styles to the uniquely American, these are the beers that we love to drink and the beers that we want to send out into the world.” It’s unclear if they have a taproom, but you can definitely buy this local beer at liquor shops and they have a list of them on their website.

    I’ve never been to this brewery in Roslindale, but according to their website they “…opened at the end of 2019, just a few months before we were hit with Covid19 and have had quite a wild ride since.     They have three locations” Woburn, Boston and Cambridge. But their Woburn location is their flagship and original spot. They’ve only been in production since 2015, but it seems a lot longer. I feel like I see their beers everywhere!
