Chris Stapleton On Significance Of RCA Studio A
Chris Stapleton released his sophomore album From A Room: Volume 1 in May, but not everyone understands the significance of the project’s title.
The album name isn’t referring to just any old room, you see. It’s referring to RCA Studio A, a long-lived Nashville studio built at the direction of legendary producer Chet Atkins where artists including Elvis, The Beach Boys, Tony Bennett, the Everly Brothers, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and countless others recorded. Chris recorded his latest album there and recently discussed the studio before a performance on Today.
Despite being hallowed ground to artists and other Nashville music industry insiders, the building was nearly lost not long ago when a developer purchased it with a plan to build condos in its place. Cooler heads eventually prevailed, however, and the space was sold again in the interest of preservation. It’s currently awaiting a $500 million renovation. “This building has a history in Nashville that is second to none, and our goal is to not gut it, but give it a face lift that takes it back to what it was when Chet [Atkins] worked here,” preservationist Aubrey Preston told The Tennessean in January.
