Jelly Roll Notes ‘Slimy’ Music Business Move
Jelly Roll always seems grateful for his place in the music industry; he’s worked for a long time to become a star. But he is a bit disenchanted with certain aspects of the music business, and he discussed this in a recent interview. His tenth studio album, Beautiful Broken, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums chart with 161,000 album sales, including 114,000 pure album sales. “Pure album sales” refers to purchases of a physical copy of an album, or a download of a complete album; it omits individual song downloads and streaming numbers, which are included in the Billboard charts.
In the new interview, Jelly says another artist released their album at the same time as his and ended up selling close to the sales number for the top spot on the charts. However, the other artist’s album was not projected to be within a specific number of sales for the top of the charts.
Jelly told Pat McAfee on his podcast, “There was an artist that looked like HITS Daily Double projected they weren’t even gonna be within 50-60,000 albums of me and Rod Wave. And then Thursday night, before the Friday count ends, 40,000 albums [from a] third-party aggregated site.”
He added, “You’re just like ‘Yo, that’s just slimy.’ I used a great term. Now, Luminate, who is in charge of counting record sales, rejected these sales, which is how I ended up with the Number One album.”
Jelly would not reveal who the artist was, but online people have speculated that he refers to Charli XCX and her remix LP Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat, earning the Number Three spot on the US Billboard 200.

Jelly recently posted a video on his Instagram of him visiting a jail where he watched inmates sing. After he left the jail, he had a crazy idea to bring some of those talented inmates on stage with him at his local arena show.
Jelly posted a video of him visiting the inmates and watching them sing. He wrote in a lengthy post, “One of the most special moments of my career happened last night. Before the show, I had the honor of stopping by a jail in Chesterfield, Virginia where they have a program called Helping Addicts Recover Progressively(HARP). I’ve had the pleasure of getting to visit and talk to the folks in this program before, but this time something surreal took place. Sheriff Leonard allowed 4 members of the program to not only come to the show but come on stage and perform the music with me.”
He continued, “I don’t know what it was about me, but I only ever believed things could happen whenever I got close enough to see them happening in front of me. My hope for bringing these men out on stage with me is that they can see a larger picture of what life can become. The place they’re in now is not the end, and the future can be so much more than their wildest dreams. I can never thank and praise the HARP program enough for making this happen, the work they’re doing is truly invaluable.”
