MBTA Announces Major Train Shutdowns for First Half of 2025
Starting in 2025, Boston’s subway system will close several important parts of its train routes. These shutdowns, lasting six months, will impact the Red, Orange, and Blue lines.
MBTA General Manager Phil Eng told Boston.com: “In 2025, the T is committed to proactive maintenance and repairs, including completing critical signal upgrades, which will allow us to deliver the level of service our riders expect and need.”
The biggest service gaps come in spring. From April 1-9, Red Line trains won’t operate between Ashmont and JFK/UMass. Orange Line passengers face two major disruptions: North Station to Oak Grove closes May 10-18, followed by North Station to Forest Hills from June 21-29. Blue Line trains stop running between Bowdoin and Airport for eight days in June.
The year kicks off with weekend closures. Red Line trains won’t run between JFK/UMass and Braintree on January 25-26. Buses replace street-level Silver Line service January 3-5 and January 10-12. The Orange Line shuts down between Oak Grove and North Station mid-January and again at month’s end.
Weekend repairs will impact five commuter rail lines: Lowell, Franklin, Worcester, Needham, and Fitchburg. Changes will also affect the Haverhill and Newburyport/Rockport routes.
Crews will put in new safety systems on Green Line trains. Bridge work is planned along several commuter lines.
By upgrading signals on the Red and Orange lines, the T hopes to reduce delays at the system’s most crowded spots.
Details about replacement shuttle buses are still being worked out. Weather and construction timing might change these dates.
